Possible pocket piece for good luck. Heads up and rubbing for luck. Trade dollars saw extensive use not only in the US but overseas as well. "Chop Marks" are also common.
Tommy's explanation seems quite plausible to me. The wear is odd---like rubbing from the left to center.
Looks to me like some kind of repair was done in the left obv field and then the coin was artificially worn to try and hide the repair.

Well, I certainly think it's bizarre to see a trade dollar worn down to G04 and still grading cleanly!
The grade or details are so low that it's almost irrelevant what your asking. If the problem was more conspicuous I might have a clearer suspicion
Oh, I have no reason to believe the grade is incorrect. It's just unusual to see one that's seen that much honest wear without sustaining damage, given that they never circulated much.
Circulated wear don't think so like you said. More like a pocket wear and this one Uneven wear but very nice any way
