That is what is called a Die Break or Chip. It is fairly common in Cents minted in the 50's and 60's. When the die is overused after striking many coins it gets brittle in certain spots especially on the date and the word LIBERTY.
I,m new to an extent, but I can tell you, these people will help you every step of the way to "the knowledge of the coin"...If they can HELP me, they can help anyone!!
I tell you until I learn more about the various minting processes I'll just know the easier errors , the one in the new Errorscope got me baffled . I was going to PM you for a hint , but better I finish and understand "From Mine to Mint" I just wish they had bigger and more diagrams . Than you have to learn open collar and post open collar , screw press and steam . Then the various ways they hubbed the die . Lots to learn on top of keeping up with Bust halves and CWTs and everything else that catches my eye . lol
Rusty, Welcome I can't answer many questions, MAYBE not any, but Stick around you will learn..... KEEP asking questions
Will do , it was in the latest ErrorScope mag , where they give out prizes to YN s who get it right . One side is blank . Now I have to find the right magazine .
