So, I really just wanted to have a poll with fun selections (I really wanted to include another couple of choices, but thought better of it, as religious / political statements violate forum rules.) Here's a 1795 Draped Bust Dollar that I believe is a counterfeit. It's not magnetic and weighs 26.0 grams Edge lettering is as follows *I'm going to use [-] for a symbol that actually is a full rectangle with a line in the center. *I'm going to use (-) for a symbol that actually is a full circle with a dot in the center. [-] *** ONE ** UOLLAR ** OR ** UNIT [-] ( ) -] ** UNURED [-] (-) [-] (-) [-] ** CENTS ** [-] (-) There are also these three letters on/under UNU of UNURED: NUI
I'm anything but a 'counterfeit' expert....so if it's a fake it could possibly fool me---but it is almost 'too good to be true' as far as grade and details are concerned... I don't see 'casting bubbles' but I think your statement about being non-magnetic may be important as well as the measurements/weights relative to other issues of this scarce and rare type.... I'd be researching like crazy if I had it in my possession...which brings up the obvious question of 'providence'....where did you get it, where is it being offered and so on... I'd be interested in hearing some comments about it...especially since I have been attempting to purchase a 'budget' version on Heritage---but no luck so far...I'm always out-bid...
For me, the reason I believe it is a fake are one you've already mentioned (too good to be true) and the reverse design. I believe the leaves on the viewer's right side (eagle's left, from its POV) are incorrect. (Shouldn't they match the other side, leaves and berries?) I am having an awesome coin knowledge day. Silly me.
I believe the word you're looking for is "provenance" - and I got this coin in a bag of random foreign coins/us coins/tokens at an auction.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I have little experience in early US coinage. The leaves on the back should be pointing between the S and T in States, not past the T.
Nice. I once had a guy send me four 1804 Draped Bust Dollars that he wanted me to sell for him ... he got them for a great price along with other old coins on one of his trips to China ... I'll give you three guesses as to what I told him and the last two don't count.
Yep...that's the word i meant LOL And, it seems we all believe it is fake...You purchased it as a 'random coin bag' at auction?? Another reason for me to doubt authenticity....I'd be on Heritage and comparing it to others right now--they show previous sold and unsold types and all those 'issues' already mentioned could be reasonably addressed...especially since most listed would be slabbed and certified...
Looks real to me. the leaves are right for this coin, but it still could be a cast copy did you weigh it ?
Ha! First one to call the Police!! Here's somethin' to compare with: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1795-Draped...394?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c502c917a
The weight is in the OP. I'll see what I can do today - a bit busy working on consignments and auction listings.
Here are a few examples from Heritage...Draped Bust and Flowing hair...needless to say they are of the 6 figure values
Okay, here are some quick photos of the edge. I started with the coin facing away from me and with the edge at 12 o'clock (so upright, on edge, but facing away from you.)
