Hello! I Still need to finish off a payment ( around $20) but for all intents and purposes this coin is mine! I paid $135. I think was a good buy but I will leave that to you guys to decide. 18 mm, 2.21 gm. Treveri mint. Struck 367-375 CE. It has a long flan crack, but I tend to be gentle with my coins. So I am not to worried. How did I do? Thanks and best
Excellent! A lovely coin at a good price. Little flan cracks have frequently brought more expensive coins down into my budget, and they don't bother me at all - they just give the coin a more ancient look. I recognize the dealer from the pic, and his images are quite dark. I've ordered from him often, and you'll be pleasantly surprised when the coin arrives. It will be much brighter than the image.
I love the bust detail. I usually measure it by the amount of detail I can see in the ear and man this has it all. I like the crack and have allowed faults to bring greats into my grasp. As far as the price I think you do alright! Got to love that late silver
"Got to love that late silver" Man it has become an addiction with me and late Roman Silver. To top it off I am reading two books of the Late Roman Empire, maybe I have a problem.
You think you have a problem...I'm actually considering a solidus of Honorius. That's just nuts on my budget.
Its only a matter of time before you level up...get some Hexagrams and Milleresions, you know a siliqua is a Gateway Coin.
Speaking of coins with minor problems that make them affordable, here is just such a piece, which also came from Praefectus. Imperatorial silver is quite pricey in higher grades, but the flan crack and minor porosity on this coin brought it into my budget. For the same amount of money, I could have bought an example with no crack and smooth surfaces, but it wouldn't have graded higher than F, if that. I prefer the detail on this "problem" coin...
Nice => that's a sweet lookin' Valens ya got there, Mag-Max (congrats) Sadly, my only example of Valens is this bargain-basement-bronze-baby (still kinda sweet @ $20 delivered) Cheers, Mag-Max => please keep 'em comin'
Thank you guys for all the kind words. I think it is rather ironic that this coin of an Eastern Augustus was minted in Trier(Western Empire).
I like detail, too, but the detail in JA's coin that I miss is the crowded SALVTIS on the obverse. Mine is a little more full and trades a banker's check on the cheek for the crack. I wonder just how much more 'affordable' these two coins became because of the crack and the check mark. 50% off??? Ordinarily I am not terribly bothered by little cracks and I love that reverse face. Our coins have very different style. We all have different priorities. I'll take wear any day over roughness but I know that is a minority opinion.
