Walking Liberties from the 30s and 40s

My fiancee bought a package deal to get a coin set of Walking Liberty Half Dollars from all the mints going from 1934-1947.

I am fairly new into the coin collecting hobby, and mostly collect gold and silver coins of little historical value. Was wondering how much a set like that might be worth?

Also, she got two coins marked "W" where the mint is. From 1943 and 1942. In the book only Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco show as the mints for those years.

Are these error coins? Is there a premium? Was there some sort of special run? What mint would that be?

    Thanks.

I think the w-mint mark you are talking about is the 2006-w silver Eagle it has the same obverse design as the walking liberty half that is the design of Adolph Weinman. There are no w-mint marks on any walking liberty coins. AND WELCOME TO OUR FORUM GLAD TO HAVE YOU.

Welcome aboard,Mordechai. The 'W' is actually part of the designer's initials, not a mintmark. The mintmark is on the reverse on the left hand side below the plant & next to the rocky ledge.

The 'W' mintmark for the West Point Mint only dates from the 1980's.

Well, so far she has spent $450 getting what is an incomplete set. Myself, I look up Au prices regularly and she only has 16 half dollar Liberties. I'm wondering if she is getting hosed.

Oh, also. When I followed your advice Aidan Work, and looked where you said, there was no mint mark at all. Only the W on the opposite side. Also, the two coins are the only ones to have a certificate of authenticity.

    Oh, and thanks indianhead.

Can I ask where she is buying these coins from? Unless she has either some very nice Walkers or a few key dates in the Walker series it seems a little high to me. If two coins have a COA then it sounds to me as if they're ASEs (American Silver Eagles).

Sounds to me like it is an ASE. They are from the thirties and forties? Are there any pics you can show us of them? Sounds a little steep as a price for me, unless there are some key dates like said above. Also, wleocme to the forum. Hope you enjoy it here!

I think the W you are talking about is the designer's initials on the reverse. It is located on the other side of the log that the eagle is standing on.

As far as getting hosed? I think that paying $30 per coin seems a little high for AU coins but I could be wrong.
If they are going to give her a 38-D in AU then it may be worth it to continue paying $30 per coin. Also, are you sure that they are going to give you a coin for every mintmark and year? Also does the price of each coin change or is it fixed? My guess is that they are offering a partial set that includes coins from each mint. I would not expect them to provide a 38-D in AU. What type of COA did they give you?

Take a trip to a dealer and see what they charge for a coin in the same condition.

No mint mark on a coin from the '30s-'40s means it was minted in Philadelphia.

With all the inconsistencies between your descriptions and real WLs, I second (or perhaps third) the suggestion for some pictures.

It sounds like there were other coins in the 'package deal'.
