It looks like he has fur hood over his head. 3 or 4 different profiles? Part of an upside down dime above One Cent? What is this exactly? Is it common?
Looks like something was spilled on it. Also dose is still have its zinc coating. The zinc will eat through the steel. Steel rusts in contact with water.
That just looks like "environmental damage" of some kind. The 4 looks like it's "greased out" (grease-filled) when the coin was struck.
I heard that the zinc eats though the steel. Once you take the zinc coating off do not let it get in contact with water or it will rust.
You heard wrong. Ever heard of galvanized steel or pipe? Galvanized is zinc coated. It prevents the steel from rusting. (The zinc forms zinc oxide on its surface which keeps the oxygen from penetrating any further and does not come off.) Anyway, galvanized pipe can carry water for decades without rusting.
It seems to be a common occurrence for the lettering/date to fill up on the dies when minting these steel cents.
It was mixed in with a pile of other coins, and while at the bottom of a cup holder, it was exposed to moisture. Environmental damage. A spender.
