They are one of the coins from Roosevelts vision to beautify our coinage . Miss Liberty with Wings of thought is also one of my favorite designs from that era .

That 1912 dime is a Barber dime. But, I agree, the Mercury dime is one of the best-looking US coins in history. Try looking at a really high grade one, like MS67 with full bands. :)

When I first started collecting, I had a bit of an obsession with them, too.

Mercury dime is one of my favorite silver coin designs too, Walking Liberty is also up there (ironically made by the same guy). Mercury dime is a very nice coin to look at. I hope you get a nice collection of them

One must remember the age of art deco was one of classic design as well as futuristic forsight. Meaning that it challenges the old school ideals to look forwards into the future .
Many of us baby boomers and the generation just before read comic books where Dick Tracy had a two way wrist radio. And today there are wrist radios, computers, and phones.
Art Deco to me is timeless. There not much art that comes under this period that I don't like.
Now take that look and put it on a coin. Like bumpers on cars that looked like a jet engine. Wings on the tail of that same car. It was a dawn of a new age with fresh ideas that made you want to be a part of the future, yet .....was Acceptable to the time period . Why.....because it was classic in nature.
one of my favorite artists is Erte. I have several Erte signed prints.
These artist were so a head of their time. And that's why when you see coinage of this period you just want to see more.
Just think if the US mint or any mint for that matter revisited this design.... do you think it would be a sell out the first day offered?

The 1916 dime was given the most attention to detail for the design.

Been collecting off and on since the early '60s and I never knew that about the '16 . Usually the artists vision loses a little after the mint gets a hold of it . But we have to be thankful to Teddy Roosevelt for wanting a more beautiful coinage for our country and all the great artists he started to gather , from St. Gaudens to Adolph Weinman who designed this beauty .

My next point if we have two way wrist radios ,and we have sent a man to walk on the moon....and have found cures for some cancers.....then why can we mint a coin that has the same classic looks and design as we did at the turn of the century ? Have we lost the availability and drive because we no longer think out side the box,or has the box taken over our ability to think and reach new hights?

Nah it was too exciting for the mint. Every coin has to have the same angle on a building or else people get confused!!! I kind of wish they did that design. Maybe its time for a whole nickel redesign. I really don't like the scary portrait of Jefferson on the nickel. Especially with wear
