I was able to identify one its a Byzantine bronze coin AE Follis 40 nummi, Justinian I, 527-565 AD but it looks fake to me. I took a stab in the dark and paid 15 for all of them. How did i do ? are the rest real ? what are they worth ? Im posting a dropbox link with pictures https://www.dropbox.com/sh/p9jbx28y1uwlthg/AAAoMDhN8N-X5_z4XhRX2D7da?dl=0
Like JA states, it's difficult to tell from the photos....they all look legit to me, mostly a series of what will probably be unattributed Roman and Greek coins... I must admit the Justinian has me interested, since it seems so well struck and clear...and I understand your concern about a fake... All in all, it seems you did OK to me while starting a varied collection..especially the forward and backward facing portrait coin..an old roman 'motif' that the more experienced members will probably comment on soon...
The coin with two heads facing outward is a Roman Republic bronze. The god is Janus. The reverse shows the prow of a ship with the lettering ROMA underneath. It's in very nice shape for the type, and it looks original. There are a number of varieties and denominations to these coins. If you want a more detailed attribution, give us the weight in grams and diameter in millimeters. But it's a very nice coin.
Im sorry john but i dont have a scale, maybe its time to buy one though. Give me a few and i will get you the diameter
The Justinian doesn't look right to me, but I don't know Byzantine coins. Still, it looks like a replica. Someone with more knowledge about Byzantines should be able to give you better information.
The Justinian is a fake, unfortunately. http://www.forumancientcoins.com/fakes/displayimage.php?album=search&cat=0&pos=13
The really worn coin is Roman also. The bust looks like Philip II, but the legends are so worn, it may be impossible to identify it accurately. The reverse has a tetrastyle temple, meaning four pillars. It looks like a provincial issue, but again, it's so worn that it may be impossible to narrow it down further. The coin with the veiled head - can you post a pic of the reverse?
I looked at the dropbox pics, but I can't make anything out of the tiny coin - I see something that looks like a bust on one side. Is the T on the reverse of the veiled bust? At any rate, if you only paid $15 for the lot, you got a steal on the Janus bronze. Those are not common, and even though yours isn't in the best shape, it's worth FAR more that $15. I would like to see pics of that coin with better lighting. Have you got a camera with macro focusing?
I have a regular camera but im not sure how good its going to be, i can try to take better photos if you think its worth it
I'm certainly not an expert in all coins, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night do browse catalogs and auctions obsessively. I've never seen any ancient coin with a Helvetica font T...
Generally I would say where there is one fake the others are suspect as well. The Byzantine is most certainly a fake. The Roman Republic Janus/Prow looks good, but I do not like the company it keeps.
the Roman Republic bronze coin is 3cm the Helvetica T one is 3cm the byzantine one with the cross with bell in the back ? is 2.5cm tetragram is about 1cm i took more pictures, i tried my best https://www.dropbox.com/sh/g4fjei3qhv3edrv/AAB05riO4X5Cop0k1X0WpYNea?dl=0
xDirty: If the Janus/Prow coin turns out to be genuine (it looks it), it is worth more than what you paid for the entire lot. Most of the others are near worthless unless there is something I'm missing.
