Im wondering if the plastic slides in my Dansco album will eventually put wear on my coins sliding back and forth on them? Id like to hope it will NOT
When you put the coins in the album, set them into the album enough so the slides don't contact them, and then only remove the obverse slide.
The holes in the album are slightly deeper than the thickness of the coins. Care should be taken when adding or removing coins from the album because the plastic slide can scratch the coin. Make sure that each coin in a row is placed deep enough so that the slide doesn't touch it. Chris
They will hairline the heck out of them unless you are careful. I have seen this scores of times and the value of such coins plummets. I recently wrote a thread and touched on this danger, if I can find the thread I will post a link.
Somewhere on CT there is the topic, but I can't find it. Below there is a link to my website where the same information is posted as an article- http://www.tbnumismatics.com/thoughts--strategies-for-building-a-us-type-set.html
Me too 'UN' cents ... I'm replacing the one I sold a few years ago...among numerous others...proper care and handling will go a long way to preserve the beauty and value of the collection--although I hate wearing gloves LOL
When I use albums with slides in them, I always push on the coins through the slide to push the coins away from it before moving the slide.
I had completed the Dansco #7070 Type set book a few years back. Now my Type set is housed in Intercept Shield A-190.
I press the coin in with a clean cotton hanky until it is up against the slide on the reverse side so that there is generous clearance before moving the obverse slide back into place.
Coin albums are probably one of the worst ideas ever conceived when it comes to coins. They are responsible for harming, ruining, even destroying, more coins than just about anything else. And yet, even after 80 some years of that, they are still one of the most popular methods used for the storage of coins. To me, that just boggles the mind.
Except for the ASE and Silver commemorate dollar. The coin will touch the slides on both sides, every time.
mine has 4 spots for commemorative coins but no spots for silver eagle. my back page just has 3 spots for the bicentennials. id like to upgrade my back page to the one with more spots.
