Well, I count it as a success anyway. Cleaned according to a secret recipe that I am not allowed to put on the internet. Before Picture: Coin: Bronze Follis IMP DIOCLETIANVS AVG - Laureate, cuirassed bust right GENIO POPV-LI ROMANI - Genius standing left, tower on head, naked except for chlamys over left shoulder, holding patera and ornucopiae. S-F across fields Mint: Trier (302-303 AD) Wt./Size/Axis: 10.75g / 28mm / - Now the After pics. Not tried out the cleaning method on other types of crud yet. It seems to be the business for what I call malachite (for want of a better word) the bright green solid deposits that some coins get. It is no good for BD.
Wow! Congrats. Those are pretty remarkable results. You've managed to coax some amazing details out of that coin. What manner of voodoo was involved?
At 10g the coin was substantial to begin with. There were signs of silvering beneath the green stuff, but the coin had developed more green since the photograph was taken over a year ago. I figured the silver would go anyway so had nothing to lose. The coin is the colour of the photograph, I finished off the polish with a silver bristled brush.
Congrats.. Cleaning affects condition, sometimes positively just like your blessed deed and art indeed. Condition is almost everything in this field. Great achievement Pish. Hope we can follow the trail and learn that new lesson. Just brushing with a silver Br...
The brushing was the final step after a chemical soak 7C. The brush has silver bristles and should only really be used on silver.
Okay, Matty... now I'm wondering if you were serious about this and your other comment about circulated coins.
Matty ancients are a different ball game from modern coins. They have all been cleaned to one degree or another, otherwise the only thing you would see on the ancients boards would be rocks.
That's good to hear, and we hope you'll stick with it. But if you'll keep reading, you'll see that there are a lot of people here who have been collecting even longer than four years, and you can learn quite a bit from them...
Matty is fricken awesome!! (welcome, matty 440) ... it's a bit like listening to an old "who's on first?" skit!! => classic stuff
"Its only worth face value" Darn, that means my avatar is only worth one measly Siliqua. I was hoping to get at least a Miliarense out of it.
Gods, it has been entertaining tonight. I am taking my box of tissues (I am still weeping) and going to put my feet up before bed. I hope to see some more wisdom on the board tomorrow.
