1974 penny E in LIBERTY

    it is damaged.

    The copper coins darken over time. It is easy to tell this did not happen when the coin was produced as the area in question would be the same color as the rest of the coin.

    Therefore, it is clear that the E had some metal displaced many years after the coin was struck.

    It took a hit to just the E, causing the fresh metal underneath to show. Just PMD.

    Wow that really makes that bright then, I guess the whole coin looks like that if the top layer is off.

    Yes, it would.

    The color on top is toning, which is actually environmental damage. It protects the metal under it, which is why when it is removed, the coin is brighter, but now considered damaged.

    You can also see a lighter color on the bottom of the L and B coloring looks very faint but lighter than the rest of the coin. Is there a line into the design of the E? On the right hand side?

    Could be the photos, but there seems to be something going on with Liberty. It is odd that only the raised area of the E has been affected.
    Maybe a lamination?
    In those photos it just doesn't look like damage to me.
