A couple of questions for this coin. 1) Is this the classic Snow-1 1894/1894? 2) How would you grade the coin considering the scratches on the back of the coin?
The first image was pretty dark. This looks like the 94/94 vs the double date to me. But I'm asking for opinions. Thanks in advance.
Unfortunately, I had a 1909-S IHC with similar scratches on the obverse and was told it wouldn't grade because it would be considered a damaged coin. I have no proof of this but this is what I was told on CoinTalk.
Agreed. This is the one that's usually in the price guides. With the large extra part of the extra 4 teetering on the upper right of the 4, this is easy to pick out even in lower grades/culls. I've found about 10 or so in various places... Shame about the scratches on the reverse. Otherwise I might venture that this coin had only been cleaned (this may be the photos/lighting making it look that way.) I might only pay 3/4 G4 money for it, if I had the inclination to add another to my collection. Thanks for sharing!
Appreciate the feedback. I considered that it might not grade out. Damage with AU details or such. At which point paying for a high grade would be wasteful.
It's the Snow-1, but the obv. scratch and the reverse knocks down the value. Since the obverse is where the variety is, value will be weighted on the obverse. I sold a G4 1894/1894 for $8 (a good deal). I think this coin is worth several times more...fine as a placeholder till you get a better one. Btw, did you sell this on eBay--I see the same coin here.
Yes, it is on ebay, but no, it isn't mine, nor did I purchase it. I was looking for opinions here. I thought it was severely overpriced.
I see it now--very optimistic price/grade if you ask me. It's EF details at best--too much wear/not enough luster for AU. Obv scratch and the messed up reverse knocks it down quite a few rungs...
We need to be wary about posting a link to e-bay. Can get into hot water with the seller, if we are bashing his/her coin.
I removed the link, but I don't see this point mentioned in the Cointalk rules--mods please correct me here. I should note--there's a big difference between discussing one's opinion on a coin, and suggesting malicious intent on the seller's part. It's not libel to say "I don't think that coin grades AU", or "I think the coin's overpriced." It's very hard to discuss a coin without some photos/link, etc...
Agree. I usually remove stuff that will identify a coin,(background) if its currently for sale. Y'all snooped and found it. Yes, opinions. Still, some sellers can be pretty damn grumpy. We deserve to protect ourselves from overgrading, overpricing and dishonest practices.
Right--but some sellers need to get a grip--when they grade or attribute a variety, that's an opinion too. And the internet is full of opinions--take your pick.
Agree, the one poor reaction I've seen, was quite defensive. However, the "opinions" flying around were honest, but pretty damning.
hi, i'm new to coin collecting and i was interested in getting some indian head cents, and noticed this forum going on... i was hoping to purchase some 1890's, a 1901, 05, and 07 indian head cents from a local woman, i'm thinking they're about good to maybe a little better than good, she seems to think they're in vf condition...anyways, what do you think is a fair price to offer her? i offered her $25.00 for the indian head cents, a 1913 type2? buffalo, 1914 barber, (you can read liberty in the headband) but there's black pitting on the reverse, and a 1913D jefferson, any knowledge from you would be appreciated... she emailed me the pictures and i'm looking for a 2nd opinion... thank you for your time - robert.
This might be a good place to get your bearings, if you are confident of the grade. That certainly takes a good bit of time to develop. http://www.pcgs.com/prices/priceguidedetail.aspx?ms=1&pr=1&sp=1&c=44&title=indian+cent
