I just made my first major coin purchase! I've been collecting a few things and buying cheaper coins on eBay for a few months now. But today I purchased an 1828 Half Cent from my local coin shop. It is the 13 star variety, and was graded by the dealer as AU. I'm not sure if I agree with that high grade, but the coin does look nice. Here are some scans I took. Sorry for the low quality images. Just wanted to hear what you guys think about it. http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/7899/untitled2yc4.jpg Also, any clue as to what that black coloration on the reverse is? Holding the coin in hand, the black looks a little darker. Oh and if anyone is interested, i payed $85.00 for it.
Very nice! Not sure I'd go as high as AU (my grading reference isn't with me, maybe XF?), but it's quite nice none the less.
Nice coin! The dark edge on the reverse appears to be natural toning, maybe where the holder it was in was not sealed tight. I think it's a great coin at a fair price! I don't buy many early copper coins but I would give it a grade of EF45 from the pic you provided. Very nice indeed!!!
Nice aquisition slu!!! I'll have to go with EF45 also but I see a rim dent at about the 1 o' clock area on the obverse so, maybe a little lower. Nice detail on the coin though.
Thanks guys. The dealer originally asked $110 for it, so I felt pretty good about walking out only paying $85. I didn't agree with his grade at all, and I'm glad to see you all agree. But more importantly, I really like the coin. EDIT: I took some photos of the coin (rather than using my scanner). Photography is another hobby of mine, but this is my first attempt with coins. The coin is in a 2x2 holder for these shots: Obverse: 1 2 Reverse: 1 2
I can't believe that he went down that low---normaly the dealers I see will only take down their price about 10-15%. Speedy
Very nice 1/2 cent for $85. As everyone else, I would agree that it is NOT an AU, but you would really have to inspect it very carefully to be sure.
