I used Coppercoins site for info on images, heavy tooling, grinding, was done to this die, I put some arrows to some of the old notching, at least what left, MDS is pretty mushy looking on the lettering, so I would think LDS would be taken down to the end stages of the die, a lot of the legs on the lettering, has been ground down, hell at that rate, most of the lettering has been ground down A062 - 20150312_144309 (2)-horz.jpg A057 - 20150312_133231 (2)-vert.jpg A025 - 20150312_101438 (2).jpg A073 - 20150314_092238 (2).jpg A004 - 20150312_075342 (2).jpg A005 - 20150312_080707 (2).jpg A065 - 20150314_085808 (2)-vert.jpg A044 - 20150312_115214 (2).jpg A109 - 20150314_122822 (2)-vert.jpg A107 - 20150314_104044 (2).jpg Heres the links to coppercoins, the first link is for EDS: http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/d...&die_state=eds the second is for MDS: http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/d...&die_state=mds there's no images for LDS ...

Rick, don't you need specific markers to distinguish between one die state and another? I don't see the markers on the EDS, MDS & LDS that would be the same. What am I missing?

I don't know if you're responding to my question or not since you didn't quote me.

However, since hundreds, maybe thousands, of dies were used to strike the 7-3/4 billion coins that year, how do you know which die pair was used?

I only used the EDS to match some of the close-up images, I don't think its EDS, or MDS either ...

The die crack at the base of the Memorial just below the designer's initials on the MDS doesn't match to your specimen. The angle of the crack on yours is slightly different.

Theres so many grinder marks there, not sure what going on with the die crack there, I just thought I take a image of it, wish there was some images of a LDS die state ..

Thanks for a response I can go off of .. Not saying this anything, its just cointalk .. There will be no split serifs left after the grinder came through, but, some of the lettering where the grinder spared, should show the error .. Let use the " U " in United, EDS show strong doubling on the " U " .. MDS shows mushy doubling on the " U " of United, so I would Think, the " U " in United in LDS state, would be almost blended together, which also would apply to the " O " in One .. If you look at the motto, ( E. PLURIBUS UNUM ) you can see how they tried to grind it evenly, so it looks as one, but you can see, theres still doubling left over .. I would think who ever is running the grinder, can try to do a good job on blending the areas in question, or blast through it like their off work in 10 minutes ... I'll post the " U " in united, see how its blended nicely, this person care about what they were doing old-vert (2).jpg

    Rick,

When you're searching for varieties, may I ask if you use a loupe or, perhaps, the same electronic magnifier you use to take the photos you post? Just curious....

10x, otherwise it would be a waist of time, if you can't see it with a 10x, its not a keeper .. The most I've seen used at the coin show is 18x ... The coin looks much better in hand, thats for sure ...
