I just realized that April 1st lands directly on Easter Sunday so Im going to post your Dates in Numismatic History for April a little early. Enjoy!!! April 2,1792- An act of Congress established the first United States Mint facility in Philadelphia and established the U.S. legal tender system, regulating coinage. It also ordered the eagle design on United States coins. April 2,1867- H.R. Linderman was confirmed by the Senate as the 12th Director of the United States Mint. He served from 1867 until 1869 and again from 1873 to 1878. April 3,1972- The official U.S. gold rate was raised from $35 per ounce to $38 per ounce. April 5,1933- President Roosevelt forbade the hoarding of gold and required delivery of gold coins to the U.S. government. April 7,1866- An act of Congress stated that only a portrait of a deceased person may appear on bank notes. April 8,1886- The free coinage of silver bill was defeated in the House of Representatives. April 11,1969- The export ban on U.S. silver coins, which began on May 18, 1967, was lifted. April 13,1976- The reissued two dollar bill was signed by William E. Simon, the 63rd Secretary of the Treasury and Francine Neff, the 35th Treasurer of the United States. April 14,1792- David Rittenhouse was confirmed by the Senate as the 1st Director of the United States Mint. He served from 1793 to 1795. April 18,1906- The San Francisco Mint became the financial hub of the city after an earthquake leveled the area. April 21,1862- An act of Congress authorized the Denver Mint facility in Colorado. April 22,1864- An act of Congress changed the composition of the one cent coin and authorized production of a two cent coin. April 22,1896- The site for the new Denver Mint was purchased. April 23,1918- The Pittman silver coinage act was approved. April 26,1969- Ownership of pre-1934 gold coins no longer required a license from the Treasury Department.
