I got this in the mail yesterday. It is my first MS70 coin. Does anybody have knowledge about these coins? I read about them on the internet but I want opinions and tidbits of information that isn't available online. Do you think they will increase in value in the future or are they flatliners?

92,500 were minted so they are not rare........the mint did a good job with this issue so there will always be high quality examples. If you are looking for any appreciation of the piece down the road then plan on living a long life......actually, your great grand kids may do the best. :)

For some reason the pictures dfidn't post. It was graded by ICG. I know, I know, it's not PCGS. I still like it. As for the appreciation, I was just curious. I have no plans to sell it at this time.

Most modern commems will never be worth much over what you paid for them.....in fact, many times they go down in value. Still, I collect them all the same......:)

I was browsing ebay and saw the light bulb on the reverse and I had to have it. I wasn't even aware of the coin. Plus, it's silver, and I can't resist silver...

I think I see a small nick on the base of the lamp on the reverse. If that is what it is, then this shouldn't grade better than MS69. I just hope you didn't pay too high a price because like Ken said, they won't hold their value well.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

I really like the halo you have around Edison's head.

St. Edison. The pope needs to make this happen, because electricity is a miracle.

And Telsa died penniless and unheralded........sad. Edison and him were many times at odds.

That's a scratch on the slab. It has a few scratches on it.

I do as well and I sit here asking myself: "Why?"

The only reasonable answer I come up with is: Simply to have some type of Goal.

I used t have the same goal with regard to Mint and Proof Sets but after losing a great deal of money in that pursuit, decided to give up on it since it was just a loser.
In short, I got tired of throwing money at the US Mint whose only upside was the possibility of receiving some type of error in what was sent.

As for the OP's coin? Yes. It's an ICG MS70 which is considered by most, on a pricing level, to be less desirable than the same MS70 coin in a PCGS Holder. Hopefully, he didn't spend PCGS money for an ICG product.

Back story? Tidbits? Unfortunately there are none. It's just another coin in a long line of high quality, 90% Silver Commemorative Coins that ultimately will only be worth their bullion value due to their abundance in the market place. It'll be several lifetimes before that value ever escalates.

I didn't pay PCGS money for it.

I have the comemmoratives from 2004-2005 for my kids' birth years for them to have. I expect no increase in value. I like the Edison because of the reverse; something about that light bulb is cool.

Not necessarily - there's a few that even with a relatively high mintage have held value well - the Buffalo comes to mind. And then the lamer ones that can only be valuable because their mintages were so low, such as a lot of the 1996 Olympic ones.

But I think with limited exceptions you are correct. I collect the dollar designs that I like, but only the MS ones. I don't expect them to go up in value much or at all. In fact I have given up buying them from the mint when I can get them graded by PCGS cheaper (in MS69). Since 1982 some designs are awesome - most are pretty weak, IMHO.

PS: To the OP, the toning around the light bulb is pretty cool...

Hey Spud. Whoa hold your horses! When he first posted this thread the pictures did not appear yet. That is why I asked who graded it. Even bugo himself said that he did not know why the pictures did not post. So at the time it was not a stupid question. Look at post #2 and post #4

He's right. When I first posted the thread the pictures didn't post and I had to edit it to get the pictures in. Jumping on him like that is not cool. I think you owe him a great big apology.
