Going through a roll of 2015 ASEs, I came across two coins that have the same mark on the 2 in the date. It would appear that maybe a fragment got caught on the die. Also, have seen a lot of MD on this year's Eagles. Can someone inform me what, if anything, this VAM would be? Thanks.

VAM's only apply to Morgan and Peace Dollars. It is an acronym for the two authors (Leroy Van Allen & A. George Mallis) of the Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars.

The mark looks like it is recessed. Could you post photos of both marks?

I've heard that machine doubling is quite common on SAE's.

Thank you for the information. Still learning the lingo. I have posted 2 more pics, one of each coin.

These photos seem to contradict the appearance of the first photo. It looks recessed, but the next two photos look raised. Which is it?

Are you sure all that doubling is machine? The doubling on her sandal looks like hub.

Since they are recessed, my gut reaction is that they are PMD (post-mint damage). Yes, it is strange that both marks appear to be in the same location, but there are very minute differences in their shapes.

Maybe someone else has another reason for it.

Would you believe that I have 2007-W SAE's with similar machine doubling on the sandals?

It can't be. I don't see the Sydney Opera House.

The "doubling" on the sandals must be the design. All the sandals on my Eagles look like that. The MD is clearly evident on the date for many of my coins, though.

The differences could be due to the angle at which the coin was to the camera, and how the light and shadows were cast upon the coins. If not PMD, what would your next guess be? A metal fragment stuck in/to the die?

    That is my guess too.

I don't think the difference in camera position would account for it. Even a piece of metal in the surface of the die would make the same imprint. I can't think of anything else.

Not an error guy what so ever.
But to o me it looks like maybe a fragment on the die as they were being punched because they are very similar in shape and size.
and under the tons of pressure, that little fragment will change shape a bit also take into consideration that we are looking at an 1 1/2" coin and blowing it up to size of a dinner plate.
As far as maybe being PMD my opinion is no way.
The odds of two coins with almost identical hits in almost identical spots is about ten million to one.
as for added value I have no clue.

I think itis a type of lamination error. Or a filled die.
