All I know is I have been looking for a type album for 2 months. One fell into my hands for only $5 missing the last two pages. I don't care. And this thread was all the more helpful and now I am filling holes from pick ups in my first year if collecting. Thanks to all the above!
I'd like to see some of these type sets coming together. Sounds like some real beauties in the making. I've shown all of these plenty of times before, but some of my favorites from my proof type set.
IF I can get this link correct here's my non-gold type set (click on the "eye" toward the left to see the coin): http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/MySets_Listing.aspx?PeopleSetID=57236
Okay, that worked, so here's my gold type set: http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/MySets_Listing.aspx?PeopleSetID=57246
WOW! Spectacular set @kanga. I'm not sure which is my favorite, but the 1820 large cent and the type 1 SLQ sure are sweet.
That's been on there website I think going on 3 years now. Not sure what the near future is for you but its been years in the making already.
Wow, kanga! That is a heck of an effort on the type set! By the way, the reverse image for your Type 3 three-cent silver is upside-down and backwards.
You guys are killing me now I want to run out and add the Seated Liberty half dime I am missing 1860-1873. It is by far the least inexpensive coin I need in the set of the 12 I am still missing and can be had for around $30 in XF (the next one would be a capped bust half dime or some liberty seated half dollars but most of those are going to range me $60-80) and would nearly complete a page (I would only be missing the capped bust half dime on page 2). I mean it makes me itch. I just did add my first capped bust half this week a lovely 1830 VF30. But man to take my set down another coin would be nice.
That's my way of showing that there is a 180° die rotation. I guess I should make a comment to that effect.
I don't like buying coins on ebay that often. I stopped at my LCS after work and picked up an 1861 seated half dime in Vf condition (they didn't have any XF's). I also grabbed a 1964 kennedy for my 1 year olds Whitman 20th century type set. Down to 11 to go on my 7070. Saw some nice CC seated dimes I might consider, I don't own a CC coin was thinking of trading out my seated dime in my set for a nice XF 1875 or 1876 CC seated dime saw I had an example of a CC in my 7070. I have P, D, S and O's represented in the 7070 but no CC. I also want to trade out my modern Roosevelt for a 1996 W so I got a W mint mark in my 7070 as well.
Gee, and after paying a premium price for the old album, it instantly becomes obsolete and loses value when the new one issues. And your Type Set needs updating too. Think maybe they will be nice guys and issue add-on pages for us old guys?
No. I think that the quality of the standard 7070 will stand the test of time. But, as to what the new might have in it, I don't know. Any guesses?
I suspect that it will just be more of the modern variations. I'd be surprised if they now would include some of the pricier early coins. If this is true, I would still prefer the old version.
My guess is a combo of what you see in the Whitman 20th and 21st Century type album. The Presidential dollar, the national parks quarter, 2009 lincoln cent, western journey nickel and what not. But I honestly don't think you'll see a new 7070 in the next 5 years (its been about that much time since they produced them they are clearly not in a hurry).
I agree with MadMar also. What bothers me is: if they have a popular product, why don't they make some new ones and sell them? Or are these albums so far down on their radar or priority list, that they don't even know or realize? I thought that we were somewhat of a larger market than that.
I would think the 7070 would have to be there most popular album and best seller it has always seemed odd to me they don't produce them or have been in no hurry to update them. They could still produce the old 7070 without updating it. The only other album I can think that would sell as well is the statehood or national parks quarter albums.
Could it be that the 7070 isn't now as popular as some here imagine? It doesn't make business sense to halt the manufacture and sale of an item that people are clawing over each other to get, like Cabbage Patch dolls or Beanie Babies once were. They're hard to find now too. The truth is that the market was saturated, type collecting declined and it was no longer profitable to continue making and selling them.
