So my buddy is debating dropping $550 on this puppy.. MS67 Prooflike SEGS holdered 1880s, yes its graded by Segs! (Numis. lists @$1400!) I know what your thinking.... Its no doubt market graded but its ATLEAST ms66 IMO... its purdy and unique to say the least.. Looks like Liberty is shooting gamma rays out of her eyes!............so the question goes-whats it worth and how much should he offer? Im sure the guy has wiggle room... FWIW the circled lines below are not on the coin they are reflections.... 2015-03-10-16-58-19.jpg 2015-03-10-16-56-53.jpg

Personally, I think it's fugly, and $550 is too high.

However, if this is one I liked, I would have to have a strong refund policy because SEGS isn't always that great, and I'd want to examine it in hand.

I'm honestly more interested in the reverse than the obverse. Super cool.

Yea the reverse REALLY sets this coin off imo... also, in hand the colors really pop and they are alot more vivid... This was just a quick phone snap @ a show last weekend...Even still I suck @ capturing color in photos... Its just a unique coin, ive never seen a nearly monochromatic TEAL morgan before...

I don't really like the obverse toning. Okay, except for the gamma rays shooting out of the eyes... that's kind of cool. Maybe it's better in hand, though. :) If I were thinking of buying it, I'd need to see it in hand and check the mirrors to make sure it's really PL.

That obverse toning makes it difficult to approximate the grade from the photo, but if it's a legit 66 PL, $550 might be appropriate (although, I'd probably offer a little under $500 if $550 is the seller's asking price). If it's a legit 66 but not PL, maybe $300-ish.

Yea i examined it and whilst it does have mirrors idk that the top 3 tpg would give it the designation... I believe whoever graded this fell in love (it really is that nice imo) and the assigned grade is their estimation of value more so than technical grade..isnt that what market grading is?? And how many bag toned textile morgans come walking thru the door @ segs?? Probably not that many and maybe thats y they got nervous and had a panic attack whilst grading this?? BTW i wonder what segs policy is for buying back overgraded and/or problem coins? As i know where to find larry briggs once a year..would be cool to slam this down on his table and say cut me a $1400 check 4 this!! Larry if you read this PLEASE CHIME IN

I agree with Chris, the tone and textile effect bother me. Good luck.

Thats what makes this site so useful, i know my way around a morgan dollar but as far as values for toners go i try to pay as little premium as possible and stay away from 2nd tier holders for such coins... even though its not my $$ i wanted to give my friend sound advice as i got him started collecting...Does anybody find this coin attractive other than me?? Id buy it in a heartbeat for say $200-$250 but my annual income isnt half what my buddy makes...

Honestly? If this coin was listed in a no reserve auction in the SEGS slab, I'd be surprised if it went for more than $300.

What I find as curiously odd is that the seller listed prices on a sticker on the reverse for MS65, MS66 and MS67. Can your friend choose between the three?

Chris i noticed that myself.. The dealer wrote Those prices I have no idea why... but its curious to say the least... My buddy wanted to buy this coin @ the last show but ATM daily draw limit kept him from getting it ( a sign?) Ill advise him what the consensus was here and my personal value of said coin and let him decide... Maybe cap it @$200 and if the dealer declines(probably will) then go find something actually worth $500! GSA maybe or another rainbow... Hell if it was my $ id seek out a real ms67 pcgs or ngc....drool

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

I love the reverse. I cannot make an opinion on the obverse based on those pics. It could be nice, or it could be ugly - depending on what colors and how much luster is there. It does not look PL to me. I'd say offer a 65+ price, and hope you get a 66 coin.

I'm personally not a Morgan guy, so for a morgan to catch my eye it really has to be something special. This one isn't doing it for me. And being in a SEGS holder I'd bet it's overgraded by at least 1.5 points and it probably wouldn't be PL at one of the top 2.
I have no doubt that it probably looks way better in hand than in the photos, but I still think 550 sounds like too much.
