Id like to post a new thread every month for dates in U.S. Numismatic History if thats alright with everyone here. Its a great learning tool for everyone here incuding myself, the self-proclaimed history junkie. This will hopefully appear in here on the 1st of each month. Let me know your input whether you like it or could do without it, I'm flexable. Dates in March- 3-24-1964- The first Kennedy Half Dollar coins were released into circulation. 3-25-1964- C. Douglas Dillon, the 57th Secretary of the Treasury announced that silver certificates would no longer be redeemable in silver dollars, pursuant to the act of June 4, 1963. 3-28-1838- The first "branch Mint" coinage, gold half eagle coins, were produced at the Charlotte Mint in North Carolina. 3-30-1795- The U.S. produced the first half disme coins. 3-31-1853- T.M. Pettit was confirmed as the 8th Director of the U.S. Mint. He served from April 1853 to June 1853. 3-31-1971- The first Eisenhower silver dollars (40%) were produced at the San Francisco Mint. 3-31-1988- The West Point Bullion Depository became the first new mint since 1862. Note: With Numismatics having such a broad range with coins from every country in the world, I unfortunately only have the time to do dates for the U.S. history . If a member from another country would like to do dates in their country that would be great, if you feel the interest as I do. Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy. Kevin
I believe you are correct satootoko. I apologize for overlooking that error when I was reading it from the U.S. Treasuries web site. I very well may have copied it down wrong. Thanks for the correction.
