Well, this coin is on it's way through the mail system. I just paid for it tonight at a low price which was $45. Well, some say stay away but I'm going to try and cure the coin if I can.
I would have bought it as well. I like a challenge. It might need some radical work, and yes you might have to keep an eye on it for some time, but you should have a lot of fun with it.
The plans have changed slightly. If the coin hasn't been treated then I'm going to try and pick the green out with toothpicks and then boil it in DW for the lowest possible temp and then soak it for awhile. Afterwards, then putting it in my counter top oven on around 200 or so to dry the coin out. Then I will put in a airtight container with a little gel pack thing to take more moisture away. Later, if it looks like it's cured then I'll coat with Ren Wax. I may adjust my plans, depending on how the coin is when I get it.
I'd give it the full treatment-- gentle mechanical debridement plus repeated soaks in hot sodium sesquicarbonate solution. Based on the pitting, and recurrence of BD in those pits, it appears to have already been treated at least once. http://cool.conservation-us.org/byform/mailing-lists/cdl/2009/0286.html http://www.forumancientcoins.com/numiswiki/view.asp?key=Bronze Disease I had some prutot which arrived with BD and I tried simple soaking and mechanical debridement. It did not work and the rate of deterioration seemed to accelerate after that. I'm aggressive now about treating any possible BD coins with sodium sesquicarbonate.
It's not a simple matter of getting sodium sesquicarbonate for me. I may very well have to get some of that chemical and try that. Who knows but you may be right about the coin being treated before.
The ingredients for an approximation of sodium sesquicarbonate are probably at your local supermarket (sort of; see note below): Washing Soda isn't really anhydrous sodium carbonate. The numerous online recipes for DIY BD-fighting sodium sesquicarbonate are not accurate. See this article for details: http://www.accla.org/actaaccla/bronzediseasetherapy.html That said, I have been using a mix of good ol' Arm & Hammer sodas and so far it seems to be effective. One of these days I'll find and buy some of the real deal. Edited to add another useful article on treating BD: http://www.crescentcitycoinclub.org/seminars_and_programs/Bronze Disease.pdf
Thanks for the tips. I don't have any baking soda but I can get some for sure. I'm going to read those articles as well.
