I got this out of a small box of foreign coins for a few dollars

I think have a couple myself.

I see them going for a buck. Not sure why that one is so expensive.

 

Well just look at the bottom of the auction where they show similar items!! Still in the Hundreds. I still don't get it!

They show up at NYINC, and their prices seem a bit high.

 

the 9 and 6 on ebay coin does look different than pic above...

 

Way down in the eBay listing, the Seller cites a French coin catalog, as stated above, the 9 with a long tail. As for the "why" of the price, you need look no further than U.S. Large Cents, with immense premiums for some minor (to a Frenchman ) date/die varieties.

 

That price still seems to be a little high; cgb.fr for example lists a few "avec le gros 0" (and I believe that is the same kind of variety), and that dealer wants €350 for a SUP62 piece. But you can also get it at €20 for TB30.

I guess you can put it up for whatever you wish. When I looked there were no bidders.
