A collector sent me this message and I thought maybe one of you would know and could help out....

a medallion wutg reference to 1786

We have found a medallion with a heart shaped inscription and the letters E, I , V, C and the year 1786 on one side and some non-english charactors on the back. Could it be a commemorative of the seperation of church and state in Virginia in that year?

    Anyone? Thanks...

The E I V C in a heart is the monogram for the British East India Company. Could be a coin from India under British rule.

Probably a coin issued by the British East India Company for Sumatra.
Exactly what it is would be better determined by a scan of the item.

Ian,it is a coin from either British Sumatra or Penang,as it is inscribed in Arabic. The heart-shaped design is the bale mark of the United East India Company.

Gosh, an echo from two years ago!....at least it sounds awfully similar to what I was saying two years ago. What on earth made you dig that one out of the archive?

Bear in mind the level of information that was provided (or lack of). Original poster said `medallion', which suggests that there might have been some form of mount either intrinsic to the item; welded on to a coin; or a drilled coin with a loop added. Personally I suspect that the original poster probably got it wrong about it being a medallion, hence my assertion about it `probably' being from Sumatra........but who knows?

Given the time of year, my latest assertion is that it is actually a Chinese replica of an EIC coin.......but with a chocolate core. As to value? Absolutely priceless! :)

Ian,you have got a sense of humour.I can guess that you dug out those Billy Connolly DVDs that you've been wanting to watch.By the way, what's that bald-headed thing in your avatar that looks cool?

As for digging it out of the archive,it came up when I went into see where everyone was looking.

I know these coins with the heart bale mark,as I am a British Commonwealth numismatist.Jtwax was obviously unfamiliar with the coin.

What? Are you trying to say that reel to reel is no longer `state of the art' in recording technology?

'fess up Adrian. You are just trying to ingratiate yourself with the original poster in the hope that he hasn't unwrapped the chocolate yet. ;)

Ian,I don't think he had a chocolate coin.Have you found any cool videos on YouTube yet? I have.I've even been watching those 'Popetown' clips & the famous Sinead O'Connor one in which she ripped up a picture of Pope John Paul II of Rome while singing on 'Saturday Night Live' back in 1992.

ah...but can you ever be absolutely certain of that, as opposed to `probably not a chocolate coin' ?

One or two, but I tend to stick away from anything to do with religion and politics.
