I believe this is a barbaric copy of Constantine the great. The obverse reads IMPCONSTINVSN and the reverse VICTORIAELAETAEPRIN, as you can see there are some unfinished letters. I'm a novice don't see to many of these to make a good ID. So, a well made copy?
It is very difficult to tell. The Barbarous Radiates were struck in Roman Britain,& are popular with British Commonwealth collectors. Can anyone confirm this please? Aidan.
That's a nice Barb! It 'copies' the VLPP (VICTORIAE LAETAE PRINC PERP) coins. Victor Clark has a nice page on these... http://www.constantinethegreatcoins.com/barb2
They were not just struck in Britain...they were struck In Germanic Areas, All along the Danube, Asia Minor,etc...
It's actually struck quite well for a barbarous but as you have observed,it's missing several letters on both sides that would be present on any real one from the Siscia mint.Nice find!
Thanks everyone for your help. I love the history and the treasure hunt of these dirty old coins. I never buy the cleaned or AU stuff. I enjoy sifting through auctions to find nice uncleaned lots to purchase and then the exciting yet cumbersome journey of cleaning begins. At last, after hours of picking and soaking the coin is ready to talk. Just imagine what it would tell us? I'm working on 4 different lots of around 15 - 20 coins each. Hope to have some more to share soon. Happy Hunting Chuck
welcome fellow coin cleaner...I will buy a higher end ancient here and there if I get a good deal but I buy almost nothing but uncleaned these days...that a GREAT coin for an uncleaned lot...can I ask who you got it from?
I don't recall where this one came from, as it has been soaking for over a year in distilled water ( I don't keep good records ). I have bought some nice ones lately from a ebay user named "roman-coinz". This seller is from Austria. His only fault is that he ship's each lot you win in a single package and will not combine shipping on multiple lots won. His lots range from 8 to 15 coins and usually sell between 4:00-5:00pm eastern time on the weekdays. My last purchased from him a couple of weeks ago was an 8 coin half follis lot and all 8 coins are in the F/VF range. I'm gonna do a ebay search right now to see if he has any lots upcomming. Chuck
great, thanks...might give him a try...as a trade... http://www.commonbronze.com/ http://www.ancientcoins.ca/ both have pretty good selections ranging from precleaned, semi-cleaned and super crusty. Most times you will get a few keepers.
Drusus, do a ebay search on "wallyworld106" I have been trying to find this guy all day. I have got several lot's from him and there always really nice. You'll find his website link on his ebay auctions but the uncleaned lot's on his website usually sell out pretty quick. I see that he has some uncleaned lots on ebay as well.
Pat's Ancient Coins of Montreal,Quebec will sell you some nice lots of Roman coins.I can't remember the URL for his website off hand though. Aidan.
Love the info everyone, Thanks! Although my wife hates uncleaned coins, I guess they keep me confined in my office.
