It looks like machine doubling to me. I need a better close-up of the reverse-side error.

    I agree with Chris.

Date looks like MD, and the reverse is hard to see

The thing going against you is the secondary image is "sitting down." Think of what a doubled-die is. It's two strikes, equal in relief, one sitting aside the other. These two strikes don't look like they're equal in relief, do they?

it does look like a double die though.

Both sides look like md to me. Not a "doubled" die.

While I agree with the attribution, there are a few things wrong here. Doubled dies aren't struck twice and they aren't always equal in relief. Some first hubbings are lighter than the final one. Here is one example: http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/diestate.php?date=1909&die_id=1909p1do001&die_state=mds

Still, I think Eddie is correct saying MD.

Jay, that's right, they're not always exactly equal in relief. This one seems to me to be sitting down way too much, though. Combine that with another "tell" that's rarely if ever mentioned, that being, the "top" image in the doubled die is always intact. In strike doubling that image is "borrowed from" to make part of the secondary image, or, is "shorted" for it. He'll see where this top image is compromised as such when he compares it to normal 1937s.
