i just got my first major coin purchase at the BAltimore coin show today it was a 1864 Pf 64 3 cent nickel i got it for 350 and it has no noticable haze or scuffs and its prety sharp and greysheet lists at 380 so i think i did good ALso i traded in my 20th aniversary silver Pf set for 290 so i didnt have to pay the full price for th proof i also got a 1944 D merc ms66FB for $47 and the luster is really great i feel like i did ok what do you guys think based on the grades and both are graded by NGC
Well unless I am looking at my monthly price guide wrong I have a 1864 pf at grade 64 coming in at around $1200.00 and the 44-d coming in at $51.00 I am at a lose for words. Bruce
Someone fill me in. My red book says they did not make any nickel 3 cent pieces until 1865. What am I missing?
Are you talking about this? I think that is what they are talking about rlm. Awesome buys! Do you have any pics? Phoenix
I thought they were the same? I don't know, you are probably right, but I thougt they were the same coin, two different names. I did an auction search Jako, and found this. Also to answer your question Bruce, I didn't come out as quite as much, a Pr64 graded by PCGS was sold for I get anywhere form $600-$1000. So you are not that far off. :thumb: Phoenix
Hi Rlm's. He also said PR 64 and that would make it a silver issue coin and if I am wrong I will be more then happy to apologize to all. Bruce.
From 1851-1873 there were silver 3 cent pieces... http://www.coinfacts.com/three_cents/three_cents_silver/three_cents_silver_by_date.html starting in 1865 & going until 1889 there was also a nickel three cent piece with a different design than the silver... http://www.coinfacts.com/three_cents/three_cents_nickel/three_cents_nickel_by_date.html Any 1864 three cent piece (proof or not) would be silver, not nickel.
Okay, thanks. Jako, did you mean to put 3 cent silver piece? I'm sorry if I got anone upset. Thanks for the info Anemic. Phoenix

That makes more sense Now everything looks in line. FYI: the last sale at Heritage 1874 3CN PR64 NGC went for $402 (2-19-07). You did not do too bad particularly if you can get a 65 out of it.
