I won this coin tonight and was wondering what should I do? The coin is slabbed as a 1949S MS67 but is actually a 1950. I found it searching for 1949S high grade Jeff but liked the 1950 in the slab. I checked it on NGC and it is pictured correctly with the auction so I know it wasn't tampered with and was just curious if you think they just miss labeled it and it graded correctly or did they just mix up the coins and the 1950 want go MS67? Would they just change the label, or regrade the coin if I send it back to them? The other option is there any value to having a coin from year in a slab labeled from another? Also even with the higher POP for 1950 they list the value quite a bit higher for it in the grade than the 49S. http://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/index.aspx?CertNumber=503097-019

If it were me, I would give NGC a call and ask for their guidance. They could deem it a "mechanical error" and re-slab the coin for free. (That's what they've done for my own coins in the past with similar errors.) That's if you want the slab and coin to match. What are your plans for the coin? Keep? Re-sell? Use it as a brick to build the world's first Jefferson Nickel Registry Shelter?
Call NGC first, 800-642-2646, and ask if a reholder for a mechanical error (typo) is automatic cause for a grade review. I don't think it is, but there is no harm in checking. Chris
My plan is always to keep the coin. I would prefer the slab to match as the errors I have are coins themselves not slabs. I don't care about slabs only the coins, but as I don't being here forever I know someday my grandsons will either keep or sell the coins I have and I want them to be able to deal with them correctly. Looking at the coin it I feel it was just a typo, but at the same time I didn't know if the sab error was something that is sought after by niche collectors. It didn't play a part in my purchase although I did find it a curiosity. It seems that NGC would have caught it since it is photographed and listed on their sight.
You can get it reholdered, and you can probably be pretty safe about it not being regraded if you point out that they just put the wrong label on the holder. Your coin should have been in holder 503097-020 which comes up on the verification site as a 1950 Jefferson nickel in MS-67. Oddly though there is no picture for that slab. In fact many of the pictures for that submission invoice don't seem to be there.
Ok I won the coin last night, paid for it this morning, so I obviously I don't have the coin yet, but I did call NGC and the lady that answered said there was a problem with this particular slab but they had fixed it. She said wait until the coin arrived and see if there was still a problem but she was sure the seller just used an old picture and the original had been fixed. So now I guess I just wait and see.
@gbroke I've been enjoying the albums on coinnection.com hope I listed the link right. I did look over your coins for sale album but couldn't find prices did I just over look them? I have been through almost every album on the site and haven't seen a dud yet. This is a must view for anyone that enjoys top quality coins and photos of such. Great Job
