So I've always wanted a high grade buffalo but being in college makes Johnny a poor boy. But I found this coin that I think is very undergraded. It's at an AU-55 right now but I think it could easily shoot up into the MS range. What do you think? Dealer is asking $35 for it.
I think it's unlikely that ANACS would have mistakenly graded an MS coin as AU55. If you're looking for your first high-grade Buffalo, there's a good chance that you haven't yet mastered the skill of identifying light wear. Your odds of winning here seem pretty slim. It does look like an appealing coin, though.
Best I can do. It has a lot of luster and the lettering comes out really strong. It looks better than some MS samples I have seen.
Very well could be. But I really do not think there is enough money to be made to buy it and get it regarded. It is a nice coin no matter what.
I picked up a PCGS MS-65 Buffalo on Ebay a while back for under $40. If you are on a low budget and looking for cheap slabs, Ebay is your friend.
It's a very attractive AU buffalo nickel. I would have guessed AU58. Dealer's price is close to MS63 retail, however, so I would pass. If it "shot up" to an uncirculated grade, it would be worth what the dealer is charging, but you'd be buried in grading fees. As has been said, you should have no trouble picking up an attractive, graded, uncirculated buffalo nickel for that money.
Go to any coin show. You'll easily find 10 more as nice or better than this, and probably for less money. I got a PCGS MS65 1938-D for $30 for my type set. One dealer at the show mentioned that he buys coins like this all day at bigger shows for $20 and sells them all before the show is over at $25, so you can probably do even a little better than I did (especially if you don't require it to be in plastic).
The coin in question is a very nice strike and has eye appeal . I agree with Frank that it may be under graded somewhat. However . ... to buy it for $ 35 and have it regarded I personally would pass. The 1937's and 38's for that matter have high mintage's. There are plenty of 65 out there in these years . There are lots of 38's varieties D/D,D/S, D/D/D ,D/D/D/S. Plus a nicely toned Buffalo would be a nice also keep up the hunt you'll bag a buffalo .
The coin looks nicer than AU55, but the dealer's asking price is ridiculous. You could buy a gem or higher for only slightly more. I say PASS.
