OKay Team, what in your opinion is the most under rated US coin available to collectors today. Give a little rationale behind your choice choices. My two are the 1927 Peace Dollar. Only 848,000 minted, 158,473 less than the Key Date 1921. Next is the 1931-D Mercury Dime, 1,260,000 minted. Only 30,000 more than the much heralded 1921. What are yours Ben
I personally am not into US coinages but I have been observing the prices. It seems that the early US proof coins are rather underrated compared to other world coins especially Russia at the moment. As well as, odd denominations are always unpopular despite it's low mintage. Actually funny enough, it seems that US coins are getting affordable compared to the prices of Russian coins are like at the moment!!!
Thats 2 great picks you made. I would like to add the 1899 P Morgan mintage 330,000 less then $100 in Good and around 350. to 400 in MS-64 another is the 1928-P mintage of 360,649 but much more expensive then the 1899-p
OK heres mine...I hope that I can list more than one. As I have stated in a previous thread I still believe the Seated Liberty Half Dime between 1838 and 1873 is certainly under rated alot of these dates have a mintage of way under 1 million and most XF examples are very affordable. The 1927-s SLQ with a mintage of only 396,000 is under rated because of low mintage and yet remains very affordable in grades under AU. Lastly, the 1928 Peace Dollar with a low mintage of 360,649 the price on this one doesnt really start taking off until it reaches MS63. Also one last coin(s), Id also have to pick the 1982-1983 Washington Quarters in any grade above MS60. I dont think many survive in these grades and prices for these are going to go up drastically in the next 10 years....you mark my words...
Most patterns... small populations, spectacular designs, often available in high grades, yet low prices.
I think the Franklin halves are a little under rated, and most are pretty affordable. Except when it comes to the proof cameos. They can get pricely. I'll try to think of others, but a few of the good ones were already taken, lol. Phoenix
You know I gotta say Roosevelts. Nobody collects them and the sets are very easy to build. A few not too expensive keys and you have the whole set. I think due to their unpopular collectability, there will be few sets around in the future. I think they are under-rated.
I kind of agree and disagree. I agree, yeah, it is a relatively small set, but, I think it is pretty collectable. I know a few collectors that collect them. But I don't think they will ever get collectible enough where they start rising in price. If that is what you meant, then sorry, I misunderstood at first. Take care. Phoenix
Exactly right Phoenix. It just wasn't around long enough to engender any loyalty in my opinion. I could be wrong. I have a set and never look at it.
I agree, wasn't around that long. Still, in UNC, condition, they can look really nice. I'm hoping to start a set. But it'll take awile. Take care. Phoenix
1908-S and 1909-S Indianhead cents are under rated. Franklin Half and Jefferson Nickel are over looked. 1936 through 1942 Lincoln and Jefferson proofs are under rated.
I reckon that the silver 20c. & Trade $1 coins are 2 of the most underrated series along with the 3c. & 1/2 Dime coins. Does anyone else agree with me on this? Aidan.
Okay, here goes: There are many Barber dimes with mintages below 1 million, and are relatively cheap. I think that the 1901 S, 1903 S and the 1904 S are all bargains, along with the 1895 S. In the Barber quarter area: the 1914 S has the exact same mintage as the 1916 D (Mercury) dime and is $100 in VG, compared to the 1916 D at $1,800. Sure, the Mercs are more popular, but 1/18th the price? Also, 1913 P (484,613) in good is $16, for a coin with less than a half a million mintage? The 1911 D & S are both under 1 million yet list for $10 and $8 in good. There are many others (like the 1908 S, the 1909 O, etc) that are just too cheap. The same with the half dollars (Barber). So, time to check out those dimes, quarters and half dollars.
I think the platinum bullion coins might be a sleeper. The mintages are low and the coins don't seem to receive much interest or respect compared to traditional coinage. At some point in the future, this may change.
Not exactly coins, but circulated just as coins did, are the Civil War tokens. There are R8 (5-10 known) tokens that list in Unc for as little as $40, and some R9 (2-4 known) tokens that list for $60 in Unc. I did not check the whole pricelist, so some may list for even less. IMO those should qualify for being under rated.
I'll have a go at it on the seated series. The Half dimes being, 1855-0, 1859, 1859-0, 1868-S, 1869, 1869-S, 1870 and my favorite if you can find one is the 1871-S. The Dimes, only one, the 1870. The Quarters, 1858-0, 1859-0, 1860-0 and the 1873-S The Halves are 1841-0, 1851-0 and the 1860 The Dollars are pretty much out of my price range so I'll leave them out. There are more I would imagine but these jump out at me due to the red book value as compared to the mintages. These coins are on my "hot list" for the seated series and I hope to obtain these in at least Fine condition or better. Happy Hunting Chuck
Have to agree with you Moen, I have been saying that for years and I will keep collecting the Roosevelt silver dimes in any grade. Bruce.
