    Britain coin collectors, help please.

And yet again, today, I came across a large bag of foreign coins, all of them from britain, half of them were in 2x2's and the rest were not, 95 % of the 81 coins total were large PENNIES pre 1940... I've got a question about some of the writing on the 2x2's .... The majority of these have the next following letters on them. 1918 K.N. / D / y63 / chv
And some have a CDV on them.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Edited to add that the most variety in the letters I've seen on these that have the KN, show letters such as ALV ACV DSU

Firstly they are NOT cents!!! Grrr fume, spit.... arrrgghhh tears hair out. Not cents never were, never will be, they are pennies, if it says pennies on them they are pennies. I know Ammerican's call their cents pennies... but us Brits call Ammerican cents cents, and our pennies pennies, cos well that's what they are.

And breath... sorry but that detail bugs me, not just a little bit but quite a bit.

K.N means Kings Norton, which was a company in Birmingham that struck them on behalf of the Government, likewise with H (Heaton of Birmingham). Basically they are provincial mint issues. I have no idea about those other letters sorry. Some catalogue codes or something?

I'm american, if it says 1, it's cent , if I was in brittain, I would say penny, i'm sorry if this bugged you too much, By the way it's American :p , Sorry don't want to start anything, I wanna learn as much about these as I possibly can, I plan on selling 40 of them, and keeping the rest to myself, are KN's worth more than I guess it's.... H ???

I also have 3.... three pence from 1942, how much do those go for? In about VG - Fine range.

I did that for a reason. One 't' in Britain sir.

Erm yes looking at the Catalogue wow KN's are worth more than H and Heaton's are worth more than the mintmarkless London variants!

I never realised this before cos it's not my area, but the KN's can fetch upto $4 in Fine (way more than the others) in VF they are $30-5 and in EF an amazing $125/50, considering most of the others only retail for $15-25 in EF at the most with some around the $10 mark that's alot more!

Dodecagon Brass threepences or small round silver threepences?

Thank you for the correction ;) Wow, that's quite a bit of money, I paid 26.00 for these 81 coins, I could sell one of the kn's and get back my money. The threepences are silver I do believe. they are round.

Sounds like you did good! (Copper ain't my area so it comes as a shock to me on the value too).

Erm yes they'd be .500 silver, issued for the colonies (the last issue for the UK was in 1941) the brass ones superceeded them.

Prices are; $1.25 in F, $2.75 in VF, $7-8 in EF, $13 in UNC. $20 in BU.

    Your welcome!

And looking at your avatar, i'd recommend you don't look at the gold... otherwise you might never go back to the liteside!

(Mind you i've got a real soft spot for $20 Libs!)

You know, actually, contrary to what my avatar shows, I've had 3 gold pieces in my lifetime collecting, and I've sold them all within a week of getting them....I guess I should change it...

Are there any other type coins that you suggest I should look into? I'm liking those that have ummm, crests on them, and puzzle type designs on them.

Crests eh? Hmm shield reverse coins are very common on the large denomination coins... some shillings and florins have shield/crest reverses, Halfcrowns pretty much always had a shield on them some very ornate (George IV is a good one), Crowns have either shields or St. George. Half sovereigns and sovereigns upto Victoria tend to have shields, All of the guinea era gold coins have shields (but they are not cheap by any means) 5 guineas down to quarter guineas.

If you like shields then British coinage is full of them!

You might want to look into George V Halfcrowns, Victorian Shield reverse sovereigns, Victorian gothic crowns and gothic florins, and Vicky old head florins. And whilst we're at it feel free to look at Edward VII Florins. (not shields but hey you might like them).

If you are looking for coins with crests on them, then you need to widen your horizons beyond Britain. Sure, UK coinage has some but it gets pretty boring rather quickly. The biggest diversity of coinage for `crests' has to be the various German States and Austria during the period from 1500 - 1900.

If you are looking for diversity of type, you won't get bored as quickly with French coinage either....for any period in history.

You may have your toe in the water, but it's time to get your feet wet ;-)

(?) Thanks, but to be honest i'm still little the wiser. It must be something to do with the settings, or something else I haven't quite got right or figured out about this site yet. I just don't see any avatar's on cointalk.

Well yes there are avatars on cointalk, seemingly everyone but you has one. I wonder some kinda browser issue or something?

Dunno you'll have to get in touch with the technical support guys whomever they may be.

Aha! That would explain it. I've just had a hunt around the site and see that you can have an avatar of so many pixels. Now I just need to find out how to go about reducing a suitable pic down to an acceptable size.
