Although closer pics would help, I'm 95% sure I can see a rather large lamination to the right of Abe.

It looks to me like a lamination. I collect these from these early years as far back as the 1909 Lincoln. It looks kind of flakey. Is the lamination area raised a bit or a gouge like you stated? Or both?
Cool it seems to be a gouge but there is one spot were it is raised but it's like a dot but the main gouge goes in the coin
Looks like a bad alloy mix to me, and the gouge may be either a bubble or some non-metallic contamination that got stretched out when the ingot was rolled into coin stock--in other words, a lamination error.
