We can learn something new everyday! "Coins struck on incomplete planchets are often referred to as "clipped". The term "clipped" is misleading because the missing portion was not clipped off. It was never there."... I just read this on the Lincoln Cent Resource Website - http://www.lincolncentresource.com/Errors/ClippedPlanchet.html
I guess it's all how you view it. To me, the term is correct either way as long as one understands the "Clip" occurred while it was still a planchet and pre-strike, and not post-strike. They're also right that when it was struck, it was an incomplete planchet. I'm not going to split hairs on terminology as long as it's understood what happened.
I don't want to get into a semantic argument, but errors like those are referred to as clipped planchet errors. The term is not misleading, the planchet was clipped prior to becoming a coin.
This planchet was clipped prior to becoming a planchet. It was still part of the sheet of metal. Maybe it should be called a "short sheet". Does anyone remember this term? Chris
I know I'm gonna get it but the rolled sheet and punched rounds are considered "blanks" ! Planchets have the rims intact and ready for detail punching. Or am I totally wrong - probably!!!
Well darn it - seems like a blank to a planchet is a robber of your house to a moving shooting target!! blank:another word for planchet, the blank piece of metal on which a coin design is stamped.
Blank and Planchet are used interchangeably by some. Then some call them a planchet once they have gone through the upsetting mill and have upset rims, a blank before. Some call them Type-1 and Type-2 blanks. Seems every book I read uses something different. Kind of like what I said above, as long as you know there is a difference, it doesn't matter to me what you call them
Let's try it this way....... "The coin shown above, before it became a planchet, was clipped while it was still on the sheet of metal." Is that better? Chris
It is misleading. If that's how the penny was originally minted, then nothing was clipped off. For example, a person who naturally balds don't get their hair "clipped" because the hair doesn't come back.... Sorry, best example I could come up with at the moment.
