Hey guys.. Anytime I do I post concerning a US CENT I like to use the term CENT. Sometimes others in their posts use the word PENNY. I think it's incorrect to call a US CENT a PENNY. A PENNY are 1C from Australia and other countries. I know this might sound silly but what are any of your thoughts?
Even our own mint calls the small cent coin a penny. In the Redbook it is listed as a small cent. I would say cent is correct. Plus its "ONE CENT" on the coin.
Cent = 1/100th of a dollar A Penny is an old English term However, we're all going to lose and find that reality is they are used interchangeably within the US.
cent if you are in the U.S.A penny if you are in England not sure about Canada and Australia ??? others here can tell you that. it always gets a good laugh from me when people get offended saying it wrong. always those die hard collectors that say you must say it this way or get smacked with a glove on your mouth. lol
Probably! Excuse me sir, I'd like to buy that coin for a "buck two fifty". A best friend from high school loved to confuse people.
The US dollar was based upon the Spanish- American dollar/8 Reales/Pieces of 8 and it's fractional system. But when buying/selling items below the cost of 1 reales, someone was always making a little while the other was losing a little. We adapted that 100 cents to a dollar from the British 100 pennies per pound. So at the time, if a merchant wanted to exchange 1 dollar for small change, he received 100 pennies.
