Just got my 1 oz Fyngoud 1984 Krugerrand. Its in pretty great shape. hardly a mark on it. It spurred me to learn more about Paul Kruger and the Boer.

I think its a great looking coin, I like the darker gold which I guess is a result of being alloyed with copper.

I have decided to buy different country bullion coins alternating with coins I just like because of historic value...

It's in better shape than most of the ones I see.

Very pretty coin with an ugly history, I'm afraid.

Nice 'Rand. I've only got a 1/10th oz. one, but would love a 1 ouncer in that kind of condition.

If I let ugly history keep me from collecting a coin my collection would be pretty tiny and devoid of ancients or british imperial :) The history of Kruger, the Boer, and the Boer wars was an eye opener though...He evn was quoted as saying when gold was found on Boer lands that it would be the end of freedom for the Boer...and he was right. those Boer were / are some tough cookies though.

Its a great coin...although I bought it for bullion, it did prompt me to learn a lot about the area in which it came.

Drusus, the Krugerrand actually weighs slightly more than an ounce, even though it is inscribed '1 0Z FINE GOLD'.It is of 22 carat fine gold - the same fineness as the gold Sovereign & the gold Britannia.

Here's an article about the Krugerrand; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krugerrand .

thanks, I read that wiki article about it already, its where I started my search and found out it was alloyed with copper. Its actual weight is 1.0909 oz.

Drusus,I took the plunge a few years back & bought 2 1/10 Krugerrands - 1984 & 1990.I regard the Krugerrand as being one of the British Commonwealth's most attractive medal-coins.I still have both of these in my collection.

How one can’t fall in love with these yellow round things! Congratulation, Drursus.

    Hello,

My mother in law gave me two Krugerrands (1980 and 1981) as a present. They are not as nice as yours, Drusus, because of their former storage in a shoe box or something similar, but still attractive.
Don't forget : do not criticize your inlaws, you never know what (good) can happen

    Cucumbor

BTW bgarg, you are right, they are very yellow

    nice present. cool in-laws.

About the color, thats one thing I like about them. At least the one I have is much more of a burnt yellow almost brassy color than much of the gold I see that is just bright yellow...I like the darker color more.

Nice coin. I tend not to buy gold bullion coins because they are so exspensive, and I could buy a pretty nice ancient for a similar price....

I still buy ancients, the money put aside for gold coins is separate from my ancients...I still buy one here and there but on the whole, as of late, I have been doing mostly uncleaned lots...I got a superb Jovian from one recently.
