This is one of two quarters I received in a bag straight from the mint. The group pic is from quarters in the same bag. It took me awhile to find out what was wrong with the coin. But, google was my best friend. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/sintered-planchet.6137/

I do believe sintered blank would be more appropriate since it does take place during the annealing process. Before becoming a planchet. I think that is what is happening here. I may need better pics. But, someone borrowed my batteries. Sintered Planchet 008.JPG

The left Washington looks like his mouth is glued. Is that PMD?

    Nothing looking 'sintered' to me......

I'm assuming you're referring to the top quarter? It looks more burnished than sintered to me. Also, your other two look oddly reflective.

P.S. Washington's mouth looks like it might be a filled die.

I got these coins from the mint. They came from the mint to my house. There was no middleman. The postman didn't open them either. Only I touched them in a hermetically sealed room in full hazmat gear. The coins are safe now from any further damage. For now.

The coin on the left does have damage. The curls of hair just to the left of the ear has a strike through. There is no definition in the curls. The device area is just flat. Yes, there is something wrong with his lip. Its a huge scratch running from his upper lip to the back side of the nose. The light hit those scratches and that is what you see.

The coin on the right has some kind of gouge running from the left rim(between United and Liberty) to Washington's mouth/cheek area.

Not all of the coins in the bag were that reflective in the device field. Some of them had that satin look to them. The mint also needs to use some type of anti-spotting agent during the wash cycle.

Now, back to the coin on the top. Where in the mint process did this happen? The reverse looks the same. Whatever the case is, it slipped through QA. COINS VI 003.JPG
