Hey everyone, this is my first post. I really like the site! I can tell by reading alot of the posts that there is a lot of experience out here. I just wanted to know if this is MD or actual HUB doubling? It looks like MD to me.. Thanks again!
The picture wasn't that clear but I feel it's my monitor not your picture. I believe doubling I saw on the 5 is hub doubling but again I can't tell from the picture. That's a nice AU anyway I love Indian cents.
I think what I'm seeing is Longacre outlines, with perhaps some machine doubling too. The outlines around the legends are created when the die is hubbed deep enough to pick up the shoulders around the letters. The doubled dies on IHCs I've seen normally show some notching in the letters or separation of details--such as the doubled eye and lip area on the 1873 DDO.
Yeah, what you are seeing is doubling that exists on the hub. For example, here is an 1865 Fancy 5 example, the die of which was probably hubbed with the same hub as the coin you posted.
