I confess this was bought mainly because I was itching to pick up my first coin of 2015. Still, it had a pretty strong appeal - the toning is lovely (better than I've managed to capture), and I've always liked coins with amphoras on them even though I'm not a wine drinker... for me they're all filled with olive oil . In addition, it also shows a prochous (pouring vessel) beside the amphora. As a little bonus of the sort I really enjoy, the coin came with a handwritten tag noting that it was acquired from a "Domokos area" hoard in late 1979. Domokos, located in central Greece, is just about 20 miles north of Lamia, where the coin was struck. Feel free to post your coins of Lamia, Thessaly, or coins showing ancient drinking vessels. THESSALY, Lamia Circa 400 - 375 BC AR Hemidrachm 2.88g, 15mm BCD Thessaly II 121 (same rev. die) O: Head of young Dionysos right, wearing ivy wreath. R: ΛAMΙ ΕΩ Ν, amphora; to right, prochous with handle to right. Ex BCD Collection
Thanks for the compliments, guys. I hate having my coins travel alone, so I have a few more to post .

Ah yes... a common rationalization Nice new coin, Z! I'm a sucker for iridescent toning around the devices. Looking forward to seeing its travel companions.
Sweet!! => Z-bro, that new example is awesome!! (great lookin' coin, with super style and good symmetry) ... yup, good ol' Dionysos, eh? (often depicted with a jug o' wine ... or in this case, a keg and a cup) I'm totally jealous of your new addition (congrats)
Hey Z-bro => sadly, I don't have an example from Thessaly ... but I do have a similar obverse and a similar reverse from two other coins (ummm, does this count?) probably not (*sigh*) ... well, ya can't knock a guy for trying, eh?
That's a beautiful coin, Z: good centering, excellent detail, and it hasn't been over-cleaned. Definitely a choice example of the type.
Did you buy it directly from the auction, or second hand? If the later, I can give you the sale and lot number.
Z, Nice addition to your collection. Again my only coin from Thessaly. Hope I'm loading this pic. the proper way. ~Doug
