What would you do ?

I ordered a set of P & D Kennedys from the US Mint only to find out I can probably get better quality coins on EBay. The Denver minted coins appear to be OK, but just take a look at what the mint is giving out (as uncirculated coins) from the Philadelphia mint.

Considering the cost of returning the sets to the mint, would you open the roll to see if there are any good coins under the top coins ?

I stopped ordering these rolls and bags because the quality of the coins in them was so low. If I wanted a nice example of each, I'd cherrypick a Mint Set.

Would I return them? With the mint rolls, I haven't. I still have mine, and I've opened them to check for varieties and maybe a high grade one...no such luck. But they were much nicer than the bagged coins. So I wouldn't return them...but I wouldn't order any more from the US Mint. I've found them occasionally at coin shops for FV or just above...

I do not order from the mint at all. just want to say it was cool seeing the 2015 date on these Kennedy halves.

I typically order the two roll sets and at least 1 bag of Kennedy's every year from the US Mint. The quality usually sucks fairly evenly across the board although "occasionally" you do run across a fairly nice coin.

For the OP, it is totally up to you on how to proceed. I rarely return anything to the US Mint Fulfillment Center when the coins do not meet "my" expectations as the quality which exists is within the range of acceptable "circulation" quality coinage.

For those that maintain modern registry sets, these rolls and bags are the primary source for material to satisfy the 2015-P/D Business Strike Kennedy Half. To cherry-pick a Mint Set would make it "not a Business Strike" to some.

If you're just looking for one nice P+D, there are some eBayer megasellers that sell good singles. I'm not sure if their quality would be any "better" necessarily since their source is the same as yours. Their volume, however, is the difference.

I stopped buying 25c & 50c P&D bags from the US Mint after 2008. It didn't have anything to do with a decrease in quality because I usually found several MS68's in each bag. Those few coins from each bag more than made up for the cost of the purchase and the cost of grading.

"Uncirculated" means just that and nothing more. When coins are run through the press at a rate of hundreds per minute and dropped into bins with many hundreds more, then run in bulk through counters and then into bags and rollers, it's wishful thinking to think you'll find perfect examples in uncirculated rolls.

Go with ebay next time, and return these. Usually someone on ebay is selling what you're looking for.

Shoot, I must be an imbecile. When I order things like this I always have low expectations of what I am to receive and am ,very often, quite pleasantly surprised at what I actually receive quality wise.

If this were a proof coin I wouldn't hesitate to send it back, but an uncirculated coin (which has been ejected into a hopper and commingled with countless other coins) is going to (more than often) have marks and abrasions. Keep the coins (rolls) Dave, and 'cherry' some more from mint sets or (dare I say it?) E-Bay........:)
