I'd be curious if the Romans even had brew in Rome before they conquered Gaul, Germany and Britain. It's just too hard to imagine that they did not have a type of brewed drink.

Dogfish Head has been teaming up with biomolecular archaeologists to reconstruct various ancient grain beverages. I've had Midas Touch, Birra Etrusca, and Sah'tea myself. They're weird and complicated beers, but definitely fun to try.

I have three Roman cook books. One is for eating in Britain and mentions beer several times. The one "Apicus Cooking and Dining in Imperial Rome" does not mention beer in the index. Under the entry for wine it does mention cider and perry and wine made from berries and seeds.

The other book talks about types of wheat and there is a type that was not suitable for making bread as it would not rise.

Which ones do you have? I can't remember the name of mine at the moment.

I recall Pliny looked down on beer as something barbarians drank while the good guys and upper crust drank wines. In many cases through history we have seen foods suitable for slaves but the masters would not touch it. Is this a case like that? I also wonder if you beer connoisseurs went back in time to antiquity or the middle ages if you would recognize what was being served. Anything I've read on old foods suggests that time travelers would be shocked and not in a good way.

You are most probably correct Doug. But when I compare the pee water beer here in the US to the great beers in Belgium, Czech Republic and Germany, I prefer the old European beers much more.

Doug => I like to imagine that the kantharos were filled with wine & beer and/or whatever else PAN decided to bring to the big-game!!

    Sicily Selinos a.jpg

    Calabria Tarentum b.jpg griffin a.jpg

Oh, and Dionysos brought a box of wine and this sweet keg to the shin-dig ...

    Boe1.jpg

Yup, and they ended-up getting the booze to flow freely from the lion's mouth ... everything was coming together ...

One of the nymphs fired-up the BBQ and the shrimp-pot was a total hit ...

    Ionia Shrimp b.jpg

Good ol' Funky Hermes brought his liar ... the chicks were all over him!!

    hermes.jpg

=> oh, and then this guy showed-up and played percussion ... unlike Hermes, he didn't score any tail, but he definitely kept the pace of the party goin' when he played a primitive version of Queen's "We will rock you" ... good times (the dude is money)

    Islands off Iberia Ebusus a.jpg

Yah, and like usual, Volusion brought his gazebo-hot-tub (all night long he tried to convince the Julias to jump-in naked .... man, what's that dude's problem?)

    Volusian b.jpg

Not surprisingly, things eventually got out of hand and this dude jumped into Volusion's hot-tub!! (yah, it turned ugly) ...

    Mysia Kisthene Orontes a.jpg

.... man, what a night!! (overall, it was a great game and a total success!!)

=> but man, it was hard draggin' our arses out of bed the next morning and making our way to the mint!! (lesson learned)
