So this coin is advertised as a raw coin that if submitted could grade out at an ms65+. Here is my problem, lol. The revere looks awesome to me. very good strike and luster. The obverse fields look smooth and the luster looks great as well(to me). BUT--there is a noticeable nick(gouge) at t eh back of the hair. Would this be enough to drop it out of an ms65 rating or because of the rest of the coin it could be a candidate for that range? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks as always, Roger
I had looked at those as well--but remember this is a magnified photo. Under normal size you can't really see those. So I didn't think they would be a cause for the coin not to grade around ms65--but I'm just guessing, lol.
Everything I have bought from that seller has been cleaned. If you haven't yet purchased it, I would shy away.
lol--that's pretty good. BTY--I emailed the seller and they say the coin is genuine--not been cleaned that they can tell. That's another problem with looking at photo's--usually can't see the small hairlines that you can get from cleaning. The person that I have as a contact has been pretty honest in the past. I guess ya never know
Do you see anything that points to it being cleaned? I know it's been said that any white coin from the 30's or before has been cleaned. I struggle between toned coins and the white ones. many times I think the toning can cover up flaws or other undesirable things on a coin--but then again cleaned coins never sell for as much and if not done properly won't even grade.
The photos you posted have the seller's name in them. If you do a quick Google search on the seller, GreatSouthernCoin, you will find that many people who bought from them received cleaned coins.
From the pics, I'm not seeing a cleaning. I'm no expert, though, with pics, but this one looks good right now to me. I would say they do have a 14 day return policy, so once you have it, if you are quick, you can initiate a return. Of course, that presumes you can tell when you get it. If you decide to have it graded, the time it takes may be enough to not be able to return it if it either doesn't grade or if it grades lower than you want. Go search this forum for people who are more expert at seeing these things, especially with Washington Quarters, and perhaps you will get a better reply.
With all the coins I have purchased from GSC, the pics looked perfectly fine, but in hand they were heavily cleaned. I would bet that this coin is cleaned as well.
Just read their negs and neutrals. The ones who do this (about 37 out of over 24,000 in a year) are saying cleaned or overgraded, for the most part. But who knows. Ebay feedback can't really be trusted. GS Coins could have picked up those (or most of them) as scammers of some sort, or these could just be the tip of the iceberg and they could be correct, with the majority of people seeing a cleaned/overgraded coin received and not saying anything bad. People do tend to do that to some degree (especially those who don't like to 'return' things, and can rationalize it will be the only time they are 'taken'). I'd say that you should look at their other coins and see if the pics all support what you expect or if you can see other pics that seem juiced in any respect (or photo'd with conditions that are hiding worse aspects of the coin). Or start looking at other forums (or this one) and see what people are saying about their coins.
So the big question--How can you tell they were "heavily" cleaned. I have purchased several coins from them--after first talking with them about the specific coin--and have felt the coins I received were not cleaned--having said that--maybe I don't know the proper way to check if they are cleaned. I hd also checked the negative feedback which I think is about 14 out of 24,000--not too bad a ratio--but then again--have to take all feedback with a grain of salt. Any tips on how to tell if a coin is cleaned? Thanks
Roger, before you purchase you may well want to search this forum for "great southern cleaned" - there are a lot of threads that are interesting and may be informative. Don't discount Savy yet.
The coins I received had serious hairlines on them. If you could post your own photos of the coins you purchased from them, we could help you determine if they are cleaned or not. I haven't bought from them in a while, so maybe they no longer sell problem coins advertised as "GEM BU++".
They take really nice images but they are known to hide problems. The image posted make it look like a 65 without the +.
I will inventory what I bought from them and post some pictures. They have taken the GEM BU out of their descriptions recently as well. The coins I have purchased--from them or anyone else--I always look at under several magnifications. I start with a 4x,then go to 7x then finish with a 30x. I will take a closer look again at the coins I have purchased from them. Thanks for your help
Thanks and I will look it up right now. BTW--I'm not discounting Savvy at all--just trying to get an understanding is all. Feedback I always take with a grain of salt--kind of when you look at going to a hotel many may say it;s great--but there's always a few who say it's the worst place they have ever stayed at,lol. But again--if the feedback comes from someone knowledgeable(Savvy)--that's a whole different ballgame
