I've decided to start a Type Set & just picked this up as the 'official' first coin for it, hope you like it.
Thanks Ben. Coming from you that's great. I looked quite a bit before I found one I liked the looks of. Other than some 2007 stuff to keep a few sets up to date this is the first US coin I've picked up in almost a year.
I mean it, that is a gorgeous coin. Well done W/O my attribution book with me I think it's an O-103 R-2.
Whoa nice! With my attribution book it says, oh wait, it's empty. :goofer: Very nice example. :thumb: Phoenix
nice That is a very nice coin. I know people have saved coins for ever it seams, but to get a coin that old that nice still amazes me. congrats on your puchase. :thumb:
Good start! You know the thing that always amazes me when I see old coins in good condition like that, is that shortly after they were minted somebody had to say "This looks nice. I'm going to save it and put it somewhere where it will stay nice." So 173 years ago someone decided to take that coin, and rahter than spend it, when it was quite a bit of money at the time, decided to put it in a box for safekeeping. Got to be glad he did... That's what keeps going through my mind when I look at coins in my pocket change that are probably worth nothing more than face value. If I store one away now, maybe it will become a prized item in some coin collector's collection in 200 years or so...
- Someone(s) sure kept that in nice condition. Very nice coin. Just imagine all the history that this coin has been around for and survived in such nice shape.
Not only that, but everyone who owned, inherited or purchased it over the last 173 years also had the vision to keep it in that condition. It amazes me.
There's certainly a lot of history there. Of course that's one of the reasons I love ancients. I can get a coin like this that's over 1,700 years old & it looks like it was just minted... Guess which of the two was cheaper.
The older one! Good point about those 173 intervening years (or the 1700 years for that matter!). It's fascinating to think about who "touched" the coin and decided to preserve it. Could have been someone famous, could have been no one we'll ever hear of... the mind boggles.
Since this thread is already going I'll just post these here. I picked up a few more coins to get this Type Set going, now I'll have to go through some of the stuff I already have to see where I'm at... I assume most folks are using the 7070 list for a guide. Are there any other popular lists out there?
Ok, I've got a list of the stuff in the 7070 & thanks to Ugaman72 the Eagle Brand list. Anyone know a site that mentions what's in the Littleton album? Does Whitman have one? Thanks
