Someone just gave me 51 Ikes and 20 Kennedys. All clad 1976's, probably AU grade. Should I dump them at the bank to make some roll searcher happy? I doubt my coin shop wants them, and with eBay fees... well... yeah that won't work. Any other ideas?
If they are UNC and super nice looking, they might bring a premium. If they are circulated...they usually bring a slight premium when we sell them at auction, but ask yourself if it's worth the effort for an extra dollar or two... Since you say they're AU...I say spend them. Enjoy the looks you get from people who can't figure out how much they're worth. (Because reading is difficult!)
I agree with the spending crowd. I also have some Ike's and kennedys to spend but I never seem to actually use them
If they're UNCs, save them for established collectors. Circ coins put nice smiles on the faces of waitstaff, and may make collectors out of young cashiers.
One LCS near me will pay $1.05 for Ike's. Hardly worthwhile, but that means he has a buyer willing to pay more.
With every bag of IKE's I search through, I ponder the same question. What to do with those uncirculated specimens that pop up. I set them aside.............only to put them back in simply because selling them costs so much money and trouble for such a small payout. Each coin should be examined closely for doubling with the understanding that there is a Master Doubled Die in the mix 1776 is doubled on nearly every coin. Once they've been examined, deposit them at the bank or leave them as tips. I used to know a lady that always stuck these away just because they were BiCentennial Coins. BUT, she'd never pay a premium for them. Just Face value.
I like to give such coins to kids I know, or hand them out when the kids come around with all their fundraisers. It only takes one interesting coin to pique the interest of a future collector.
