Happy Mardi Gras everybody, I hope you had as much fun as I did . So this was a pretty great year, I took off a couple of days this year to enjoy as much of the festivities as possible. In total I went to 43 parades and caught a boatload of things that I really don't need anymore of, so I handed that stuff to the cutest girl around or to some little squirt. But I did get some great doubloons. I haven't counted them up yet, but here they are. Those are cool and all, but I also got these from a friend of mine. Some exceedingly rare 1 oz silver doubloons. Most of these have a mintage of five to fifteen pieces and are almost never given to the public. I thought that the silver doubloons would be the highlight of my Mardi Gras, but not even close. I decided that it would be a good idea to embarrass my son as his band marched by on Sunday. I had 1,000 of these flyers printed and handed them out for the next block from where my buddies and I go. The results were epic! There were thousands of people chanting his name and when the band director pulled him back and pointed him out the crowd went nuts like the Saints just won the Super Bowl. It was the single greatest moment of Mardi Gras that I have ever experienced. The results... Notice all of the flyers in the background. That was pretty great. Happy Mardi Gras!
bon mardi gras, mon frere! I recognize doubloons from several of my favorite krewes - Choctaw, Bacchus to name two. Endymion, Pegasus and Pete Fountain's Half Fast Walking Club were up there near the top of my list as well! Good times!!!
Thanks for the offer but I am not adding to my doubloon collection anymore. I just have what I caught as a kid and am happy with that! Your story about you and your son is awesome and really brings back the memories! Cheers!
Whoa ... And now you have and need several months to recover, eh? Here is a photo from our local Rosenmontag (Lundi Gras, sort of). The parade is mostly bands, artists, club trucks ... but also a few with political satire. This motto means Satire cannot be killed. Cool! Hope your son felt encouraged rather than embarrassed. Christian
I love Mardi Gras tokens, and hopefully, when we move to Gulfport Mississippi (when we sell our darned house here in Idaho), we will go to many Mardi Gras parades. I also collect some of the doubloons... Do you have any with the following on them? * Owl * Lincoln (incl. Mt. Rushmore) * Felines (lions, tigers, cats and any animal from this animal group) * Good Luck
I'll have to check with the old man on that @OdedPaz, he is really the doubloon collector. I just get what I can for him to continue my grandmothers collection (started in 1962 when Rex started throwing them). He literally has over a million pieces. No kidding, he uses old library card catalogs to store them in a room dedicated to doubloons. He would know which parades or marching krews would have that sort of imagery. I know one krew used an owl as the obverse emblem, but not sure who it was offhand.
1964 Rex doubloons have the lion (along with the tinman and the scarecrow) from Wizard of Oz on the reverse.
Wow! I'm impressed! If you can find the info for me, I would greatly appreciate it. Especially if he has traders...
