There are other places like VCoins. Each dealer is bound by a code of ethics not to sell fakes. Although, even "professional" dealers can be fooled just like with modern coins. Best defense against fakes is education. But it is not something to really worry about, the bulk majority of coins are real that are for sale in different online markets. Just be careful and not worry about it too much. It takes the enjoyment away from the hobby.

I started with late Roman Imperial bronze coins which is ideal and more suited for a collector just starting out with ancients.

This is exactly why I wanted to post my "mistake". I wanted all to see how easy it is to be fooled (of course, that is giving me credit). I don't, however, want to discourage anyone from joining in the fun of the hobby. As Gil said, be careful and double check the fake databases before pulling the trigger on any auction, especially Ebay.

I might disagree with GIL about LRBs. I just am not a fan. Yes, there may be a lesser chance of fake LRBs since generally there is not a lot of money to be had, but fakes are still there. My choice of collecting is First Century AD and before, because I like the artistry as compared to LRBs. But to each his/her own.

One other thought. If you decide to pursue Roman Republican, or any other Ancient coins for that matter, post what you are interested in buying here for comment before you buy. Or send a personal message to just about anyone of us. We all have our opinions.

There are good sellers on Ebay who offer 100% lifetime guaranty including some Vcoin dealers.

The Bursio type is one that has a hundred varieties separated by the minor device just left of the trident on the obverse. If you look at all of the Forgery Network items you will see many of this device (but what is it?) and a few others which might not hurt to memorize. Of course if the coin is a cast of a genuine original someone might have the original but it is better to consider all the clones and the original as a group and avoid them.

This one is one that does not have a number or letters over the horses on the reverse. There are many that do and do not. Both of mine are from the lettered series. Several of the obverse devices are not clear to my eye but my scorpion is. ra5050bb2231.jpg

I do not know what the symbol is on the other. This was shown recently as a weight adjusted flan coin.
