Ok, I dont mind looking silly....... But..... I have seen and handled many hundreds if not a thousand or more URBS Roma coins from a dealer bought group. I have cleaned them and have seen most variations in hand, with die clashes.....mules, imitations etc etc. The most common die clash type are the Lugdunum PLG URBS with many negative impressions..... With this mint, for some reason you get impressions of the helmeted bust quite frequently on the reverse. I cleaned a coin today and something caught my eye.....well actually, it smacked me in the face. The 'thing' I am talking about, is not a negative impression, but stands proud from the coin surface. It looks typical of the style of the 'thing' in question when it is engraved to form part of the reverse.... I'll stop babbling on and let you see what I am talking about. Pic 1 and 2 are of the uncleaned raw coin. Pic 3 and 4 are after treatment when still wet Pic 3 and beyond is after cleaning etc etc (ps. The coin has not been waxed or lacquered. The coin surface when cleaned is almost mirror like and is simply rubbed between thumb and forefinger with a cloth. This group is exceptional in its preservation and many members have bought them....they are 100% authentic. ) The coin is not double struck, shows no signs of die clash and the stars are spaced sufficiently for the insertion to be deliberate.....
Hmmmm? ... tough to say, my friend ... => it "could" be the wolf that you've sketched, but there could certainly be many other interpretations of that lump (but again, you could be correct) ... Rorschach syndrome?
I think that I've almost encountered a half similar ( let's say ) situation during the past few days. I acquired a raw coin and soaked it in distilled water for a couple of days, and then .. just look what I found...
I have run through the symbols found in between stars ...... cant think of any that would fit. If it were double struck I could easily believe its a star... I am stumped, but in the hand it looks way more like a wolf facing than in the pics. The ear is very defined as are the dots for eyes.....who knows eh?
