Interesting Phantom "D" 1953 Roosevelt Dime?

    Came across this in a mint roll of 1953 Roosevelt Snapshot_20150101.JPG Snapshot_20150101_1.JPG Snapshot_20150101_3.JPG Snapshot_20150101_4.JPG Snapshot_20150101_5.JPG Snapshot_20150101_6.JPG Snapshot_20150101_7.JPG dimes, what are your thoughts?

    Chris - that last appeared in 1986, coin is older.

    Interesting. Is that also doubling below the mint mark?

    The mintmark doesn't appear to be doubled. it's clear the phantom "D" drops off from the mintmark with die scratches.

    Does the phantom D look incused below the field or bas-relief above the field? If incused I'm thinking a dropped letter D. To far apart to be a RPM.

    I don't know! Some people claim to see Jesus on their coins. So, why not?

    Interesting mystery. If incused then maybe dropped letter. But the die scratches? I don't really know. Could also be just a weird lamination or planchet flaw that resembles a D mintmark.

    It looks like someone at the mint tried to scratch out the dropped "D", perhaps cocktail hour started early that day?! ;)
