So i finally found some more kennedys today and did some roll searching. my question is I came accross 4 1972 D's that have a funny tint and glare to them. I am still new still this stuff so wanted to get some opinions. Did they just discolor that way or did the previous owner tamper with them

    hamman88 Spare some change, sir?

Check to see if it was struck on a silver planchet by accident, it might be the silver toning.

There where no silver coins minted in 1972 as far as I remember. They stopped minting silver halves in 1970. They minted the 40% silver in 1976 and then restarted the 90% silver in 1992.

_IF_ there were still 40% planchets hanging around, they weighed 11.5 g, while the clad planchets weigh 11.34g, so unless you have a very accurate scale, it will be difficult to use weight as a method.

It's probably just toning. You can literally find coins in any color you can imagine, and in some other colors that you can't imagine.

It is hard to tell from the pictures could be tone. I know back in the 70’s and 80’s the gold dip thing was popular. Probably toning.

Looks like toning to me. Another way to tell if a coin is silver is to look at it's edge. If it looks gray or anything, it is silver. If it is red or brown, it is normal clad. Good luck. :thumb:

why would it be just those 4 coins from the rolls? Just something about that date?

No, it's probably because those 4 coins were all owned by the same person. And because of the way that person stored the coins - they toned.

Funny silver should be mentioned because I also had a 1973 that caught my eye initially because it looks a little thicker and has no real "copper color" that I can see on the ridge. I dont think it is silver because I didn't think they made them that year. I attached a reallly blurry pic but I am hoping the one Iam talking about can be picked out.

Also had a couple coins where the ridges look smoothed down. Makes me wonder where they all traveled from.
