I have a feeling its a clipped planchet, just wanted some other opinions. Sorry for the cell phone pictures...

It could be a straight clip, but it's really hard for me to tell given the condition of the coin. Chris
I would say no clip but sanded down since that spot is alot more clean and shiny compared to the rest of the coin
I'm going to say real clip, because you can see the "Blakesley Effect" on the opposite rim. When a clipped planchet goes through the upsetting mill to get a rim, the lack of pressure on the clipped portion results in a weakly raised rim on the opposing side. Such machines were in use even in 1889. I also think the gap in the denticles in AMERICA points to being struck that way--imo.
So I found a certified straight clip IHC to compare. This is from a MS62 Anacs holder. You can see pretty clearly how the lack of metal due to the clip prevents the denticles from getting struck sharply near the edges of the clip (white arrows). While your coin is worn, I do see less definition in the denticles on either side of the clip--such as around AMERICA--that's a good sign.
Ah now I see what you're saying about the worn denticles. Now say a few others chime in, including this Mike Diamond you speak of, and they also agree it's a clip, is this something worth sending in to slab? Also, is there any opinion on what's going on with the 9 in the following picture? I feel as though all the grime is playing tricks on my eyes...
If you get an expert's opinion, maybe they can help you determine value. I don't see enough IHC clips to have a good idea. The MS62 one above sold for $94 last year--taken from the Heritage auction site.
I would say no. Yes it looks like a straight clip but your IHC is in bad shape. You can't even see the word LIBERTY. I say stick it into a 2x2 and put it away. Save your money is what I have been advised on my own coins that look like this.
That's what I'm going with. I don't see this to be worth much over the going rate of one in good condition. Considering what KurtS posted about that MS62; if that went for $94 I'd say mine goes for .94 ha
