Bill in Burl or other practiced eye: This nickel appears to have the flat field with S against the rim, and the 2 "far" from the leaf (rather than just about touching, as with the Near 2. What do you think?
I am not a 5 cent collector. Do an archive search on this or the PCGS site (foreign coins) and there are 2 quick ID methods for determination. One way is to compare the space(distance) between the 2 and the leaf with that of the space between the 3 & 2. The other is to take a 3X5 card and place it so that it essentaially draws a line between the tip of the right leaf and the top of the 2. Then you see where that line is in relation to the 1 in the date (where that line meets the 1 or how it misses it). Unfortunately, I forget what either of those 2 tests show. In other words, if the spacings are equal in the first test or tip/1/tip in the second test; does it mean that it's a "near 2"? An archive hunt will tell you without looking at the S and the rim. I just need to take better notes or start collecting 5 cents instead of large cents. OK, I found the thread on the CCF site: http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=175170 I prefer Zonad's method of the spacings, where the 2-leaf spacing is nearly twice that of the 3-2 spacing and that "2 to 1" spacing difference shows a "far 2" with the "far" meaning "far from the leaf, not far from the 3".
Wow, that's quite detailed, for a non-expert! Thanks again. Meanwhile, the optometrist says my new glasses should be here any day.
