Sweet Vintage Capital Plastics Jefferson Nickels Book - will be upgrading my collection!

I was really impressed with the Capital Holder that @Lehigh96 showed to collect some uncirculated Jeffersons in. I had my collection of Jeffersons that I had found CRH in Whitman Folders, but found myself not really looking at them much. So I went looking to see how much one of these beauties might be.

Lo and behold, I found they were pricy, and there was one in book form on the bay. Decided to pull the plug and buy it anyways, because Jeffersons are cool to look at, and this way I would be able to view both sides.

I think it's a great buy for me. I put my best CRH '38 thru '65 ones in there, and found I am only missing 15 of 72! Not too shabby for CRH these on and off for about 8 years now. And, of course, finding some in retail change.

But!!!

Now I want to have this hold higher grades of coins. So.... I will be upgrading the ones I have with bought ones at some point, and really now just need to decide what grade or grade 'range' I am looking at to have. Meaning at some point I hope to have this have a quality collection in it and re-put my CRH finds into the Whitman Folders, or just sell those.

What is the best grade to collect these in that will be affordable yet be consistent with a grade (AU?, MS58-BU64?), since they will be raw coins (preferred) or coins I would have to crack out - ok on the bad tpgs if I can make a find or something (cherry pick one). Suggestions are definitely welcome!!!

Jealous of that album!

If you decide to go AU (or just complete the circ set), I will probably have a TON of the coins you need.

 

Now that is freaking awesome, I'm so jealous! A hybrid of an album and a capital plastics holder, GENIUS!

If you are planning to start an album collection of Jefferson Nickels with an album that nice, you should stick to collecting gem grade coins or lower BU coins with full steps. Jeffersons only really get expensive when you enter the premium gem grades. Almost all Jefferson Nickels are readily available certified in MS66 or higher. The exception would be some of the scarce full step date/mm. Most Jefferson nickels cost under $20 in the MS65 grade and when purchased raw, they can be obtained very economically.

 

That's a great looking album. Not collecting those by year, got only the War Nickels by year/MM, also in Capital.

 

@Lehigh96 This is why I tell people who are just starting out to collect Jefferson Nickels (if they're going to stick to US coins.) And yet they always go to Lincoln Cents because they think they'll be cheaper...

 

Yup, the Jefferson Nickel series is very diverse. It can be very affordable, even in the uncirculated grades, or it can be very expensive if assembling a top end registry set. There is a Jefferson Nickel listed for $15K on E-Bay right now, a PCGS 1938 MS67+ FS with colorful toning. Yet you can buy a 1938 MS63 FS raw for less than $10.

 

Beautiful holder Kasia , I wish they made a blank one in cent size for my Civil War Tokens . I like your set the way it is , but like Paul said in nice 65 or 66 grades some with FS and some without . Either way you can't go wrong . But I do like that so far you've a great looking set from pocket change .

Rusty, Look for a IHC or Lincoln holder, they are the same size (19mm) as CWT's. The original gold color printing can usually be removed using alcohol and/or a very sharp razor blade. With a bit of practice the holder will not be scratched. For any light scratches I use the stuff I use to remove scratches from slabs.

 

Capital Plastics makes a 25 hole holder for Lincoln cent size coins with no dates. It comes in white or black priced at $18. Catalog number is GX51A. Ufortunately they don't have a picture of it in the catalog so I can't say what the hole arrangement is or the actual physical size.

OK Wizard Coin Supply has them for about $13.50 and they are in a 5X5 hole arrangement.

OK now with the pictures from some of the supply dealers sites these are not the screw post type holders, these are their snap together holders with a black or white insert

 

Thanks Bill , Conder , great idea as I have them in a Dansco like album now , and the RB and brown ones are kind of hard to see . I think an album like Kasia's would make them easier to see and help preserve their colors .
